I want to but how can we know if they are accurate? and what else will they do with your info?

my mum did one and she got 80% english, which I think is a bit vague considering that we are an island that has been invaded over and over for hundreds of years.
KuroNeko · 41-45, F
@SW-User I just wish I could trust any company that says that, because they all do, yet still my info get's sold to scammers and spammers.
SW-User
Its in their contract with you that they will not sell your info or give it away yo anyone. Pretty upfront otherwise I wouldn't have done it. Plus I have my profile on private. No one can see it but me. And you don't have to have your info made available to prying eyes. Its just as private as being on here. There are settings for privacy for your profile, trees, dna test results, etc.@KuroNeko
JimboSaturn · 51-55, M
@KuroNeko I think it compares your DNA to living populations today. So you would have similar DNA to people living in England which in turn have DNA from all over the place. Where does it stop?

cherokeepatti · 61-69, F
No I did not. But it would be very interesting, I don’t know how accurate any of them are though. I don’t want to be put in their databases to have my information sold to outside entities for hell knows what.
SW-User
Wow that would be a shock to see a resemblance in a coworker who could be your sibling! I looked to see if my dad had any other children but haven't found anything on ancestry.com. He was in the Navy years before he met my mom.@cherokeepatti
cherokeepatti · 61-69, F
@SW-User I didn’t peep it out to her. I asked her if that adopted father was good to her and he was. If we’d done a DNA test and it was shown to be positive it would almost be news-worthy wouldn’t it? But the sad thing is that my father was a very sadistic man who committed a lot of crimes, I wouldn’t want those thoughts to get into her mind. She is a very family-oriented person and thought that could have done some damage or at least been haunting to her.
SW-User
I agree with you there. The half sister I found out about was raised in a good home. I have no interest in meeting her. She had a better home with them than she would have had being raised by my parents.@cherokeepatti
JimboSaturn · 51-55, M
Yes it surprised me. I was expecting a more diverse result; instead I was 46% Irish, 43% Scottish, and 11% various Scandinavian countries. I was expecting some English. Funny though it was PRECISELY how I felt about myself.
SW-User
I agree with all the traveling they did centuries and now, its no wonder we are a melting pot everywhere. I found out I have a half sibling about 3 weeks ago. Still in shock.@JimboSaturn
JimboSaturn · 51-55, M
@SW-User Wow that would be crazy! I would be extremely curious.
SW-User
I was curious and looked her up. She looks like my mom. I have no desire to meet her though. @JimboSaturn
Striker · M
found a daughter but she doesn't want to get to know me.
SW-User
About the half sister I never knew I had? I don't plan on meeting her because I grew up with 4 siblings and mom never mentioned her. Im thinking it was too painful and either it was a terrible mistake on my mom's part or rape. I have no obligation to that woman as she's a complete stranger. But in your case it's a very different story. @Striker
Striker · M
@SW-User hugs!
TheArbitrator · 36-40, M
@Striker Wow, you were a ho
Dolimyte · 41-45, M
No, those things are based on very poor science. How did you find out about the adoption from a test like this?
SW-User
Well I believe its pretty accurate from the family passing down information
and my daughter was my number one match then found out about a half sister who was my second closest match. Then I read her profile and she mentioned she was looking for her birth mother. My mother's full name was there. I almost fainted. @Dolimyte
Dolimyte · 41-45, M
@SW-User I didn't realize it matched you to other users. That's cool that you found a sibling that you didn't know.

I was referring to the way they determine ancestry, also the fact that identical twins can get differing results.
SW-User
When I found out my test results it was spot on. Finding out about a half sibling was shocking and still is.

I don't understand how dna works with twins but in my case, it did. It even showed on a map exactly where my great grandfather came from in Sweden. @Dolimyte
Powderflask · 31-35, M
No, those data bases aren’t private.
SW-User
True but they give you the opportunity to keep it private. @Powderflask
Powderflask · 31-35, M
@SW-User I just can’t take their word for it after clients DNA results were used by the government.
SW-User
I wonder which dna testing site? @Powderflask
exexec · 61-69, C
Yes. The main components were expected, based on prior research, but I was surprised to find a strong Scandinavian connection on the mtDNA line. I haven't found any of those connections in my research, which isn't unusual since I lose female last names in the 1800's.
JimboSaturn · 51-55, M
@exexec I think it's because the Vikings were everywhere for a while.
SW-User
I agree the results can be surprising.@exexec
MeowsoliniReturns · 51-55, F
I did it before the pandemic. I was adopted at birth, and was able to find out my nationalities. It was very interesting stuff! It's amazing that you found out that you have a half sibling! Have you met yet? Or do you plan to meet? I am hoping that one day I may find some members of my birth family.
SW-User
Have you met your biological family?
I have no plans to meet her because my mother, if she was still alive, would be horrified. I have no idea if the child she gave up was from a mistake or rape, etc.
I want to respect her wish to keep it secret. I'm still processing it.@MeowsoliniReturns
I tested my whole family with both Ancestry and MyHeritage. I tested myself using 23&Me (the only test that revealed some Native Ancestry). Both of the others indicated about %50 African ancestry (largest amount for Pop, my siblings and myself was Nigerian) Mom had %20 North African. The rest for my siblings and I were French (MyHeritage read as “West European”) 10%Irish.
SW-User
Were you surprised by the results or did you find the tests pretty accurate?@bijouxbroussard
@bijouxbroussard Surprised by the lack of Native Ancestry markers in two of the tests, my maternal grandfather was born on a reservation in 1900. And of course I knew about the African ancestry, but it was really cool to find out some details.
SW-User
I agree its fascinating to find things out.@bijouxbroussard
SW-User
Haven't, no. I'm interested in my mum's side because my dad's cousin did one and we know a lot about that side already.
SW-User
Good enough!@SW-User
SW-User
I did yes. I wasn't too surprised. I'm 100 percent goblin. :)
Jk . I have one too.
SW-User
Cool. Its a fun little hobby.@SW-User
SW-User
@SW-User It was really interesting.
vetguy1991 · 51-55, M
No I didn't
vetguy1991 · 51-55, M
@SW-User cool
Adogslife · 61-69, M
@SW-User ten generations? Seriously!
How much time do you spend doing ancestry?
SW-User
Maybe once a week. @Adogslife
UndercoverBard · 31-35, M
One of my sisters did one, it was about as expected really
SW-User
Mine came back as expected also with a few surprises.@UndercoverBard
deadgerbil · 22-25
I did it and it helped show what's actually in me from my dad's side
SW-User
It's awesome seeing the results
@deadgerbil
