I Love My Mom

2G phones have just been recalled. It signals the end of an era. My 77-year-old Mom, although she had a Nokia, never used it much. So when they were phased out and we gave her a touchscreen smartphone, she complained.

"Where are the numbers when I need them?" she says, referring to the home screen which shows up without the number pad. "And then I anyhow swipe and suddenly a woman starts talking," she says while trying to mimic the words in broken English.

"She's talking about Siri," the boy tries to make sense of it with a straight face.

And so the boy tries to set it to a Mandarin-speaking Siri with the granny protesting that she does not need a phone to scare her out of her wits while buying fish at the market.

The old and the young made me laugh my guts out yesterday. It was a gem of a moment.
