I Love 1950's Music

@seeandhear: I think you are right. Back in the 1940's and 1950's -50's especially "fool" meant something different that what it may now. A lot of songs had Fool in it- or lyrics speaking of one. Male and female.

As good as Ricky does this, the backing band he had at Imperial was equally as good.

@Elandra77 Good Lord! I hope he didn't sing! He is unintelligible as of many years ago! I loved Dylan and Baez and the Byrds, but Dylan became impossible around 2003.

@BemyValentine Same. It was great show -even better with a song at the end. "Traveling Man " was his last significant hit for Imperial.

Ricky had an excellent voice! There are very few of his I do not like. But I think all of us, be we male or female, have been a similar fool at one time. Or will be. He tells such a great story.

Ah! Johnny is a classic. As is that song. Just like Nat King Cole and Frank Sinatra are classic.

Nat's is so smooth, love his 'Stardust' and the picture it paints, and who could forget blue eyes himself!

I remember watching him back then as well. With the Donna Reed Show coming on right after it. His music is timeless-as it does touch so many. Still. May he RIP.

Thank You. And now begins another decade! Ricky died at 45 and never made it this far. Such a shame.

There was a simple elegance to his music- abd t like music of the time. Sure, ther was innocence to it- but that was not always all that bad. Torch songs- like Sinatra's "Witchcraft" and the raucous "Sixty Minute Man " by Billy Ward and The Dominoes could still be found. But that elegance, and heart to heart simplicity got lost over time. And it is a shame. So many musical genres existed at one time, and in harmony, in the 1940's-late 1960's. "Who Put the Bomp" by Barry Mann was a fun song. As was "The Happy Organ" by "Dave "Baby" Cortez"--BUT--it was also an instrumental. It existed alongside Link Wray and Ray Conniff. Silly songs like "Witch Doctor" by David Seville and a multitude of songs of by The Coasters could be heard. Jazz numbers-as well as a Japanese language song- became Number 1 songs on Billboard and earlier My Hit Parade.

So much has been lost- and not just that elegance and simplicity- but talent as well. I can talk rhymes. But anymore, there are No musicians. Take away their synthesizers and loop devices and so many other gimmicks and they are no more than talentless deaf mutes.

On EP- I posted a LOT of Ricky's songs. I may do that again.

I always thought that changes in the music scene--specifically Beatlemania and The British Invasion--were responsible for his decline in popularity, but it sounds like the switch to Decca played a big role in this. That’s something I wasn’t aware of, so thank you for the information.

@Rutterman: His father, Ozzie, managed and micro manged his career until he was 21. And by that I mean he even choose which shirts to wear with what and how a photo shoot would be. And a lot more. So I would imagine this was suffocating for Ricky. And I thing that is why Rick (Rick, not Ricky after 21) ,made the decisions he did. But in hindsight, they were bad ones. he was trying to escape being Ozzie's boy.

The British invasion did change the face of music. Many careers were killed. Some lingered on. but in obscurity. Teissue was that they could NOT get airplay- no matter HOW good the material was. As listeners wanted the Stones, Beatles, Peter and Gordon and Herman's Hermit's. One had to be bigger than that (Sinatra, The Beach Boys, or a soul act ) to survive. Same happened to many English careers in England.

Another Decca one you may not have heard- but this one sounds as if it COULD be aan Imperial hit- and done earlier by Ricky.

Note: Ricky also had an EP of Hymns that is long forgotten about. (on Imperial) In those days most serious artists did an LP or more of Hymns. And they charted. (Elvis, Johnny Cask, Tennessee Ernie Ford)

The backing band is the same as he used at imperial. It is a cult classic.

@Elandra77: Didn't realize how controlling his father was. I'm sure Ozzie only wanted what was best for his son, but that's really awful. Apparently, it had some unintended and unfortunate consequences.

Yes, I did know that a number of popular artists did Hymn albums back in the day. Wasn't aware that RN had done one.

@ShiftingGears It really was, His voice has such a purity to it. Almost innocent in tone and nature. As did a few others . But none could sell that image better than Ricky.

Mush as I adore this-and as much as I relate to it. Is sometimes brings a tear to my eye.
