Before sanity pads were invented, what do women do when they have their periods?

Sanitary, not sanity pads, lol, though some of us ARE especially crazy that time of month... But before then, women wore a kind of belt that held the absorbent cloth in place. It was messy, but it was what they had.

They used available material scraps before sanitary napkins were introduced.
