Anybody else take melatonin?

I find it really helps me get off to sleep, but lately I'v been taking it more often. Now I've not got any left and I can't sleep :/

That is the trouble with sleep aids, the brain gets used to them and the effect gets less. Best used only short term.
CathyUK · 56-60, F
I stopped taking it as it affected my mood next day.
SallyK · 46-50, F
@CathyUK I've not taken it for over a year now and feel better
CathyUK · 56-60, F
@SallyK That's good. Sleep aids are ok for a very short time but I think make things worse long term.

Melatonin is fine to use as an occasional sleep aid, however using it all the time can cause a melatonin deficiency in your brain. You should alternate sleep aids, and try something like chamomile, Valerian root, hops, and other natural relaxants. I once gave my dad melatonin as a gift, and he's used it so much that 18 years later, he doesn't sleep without it. Also, limit your caffeine intake, and you should have NO caffeine 4 hours before bed. You might want to give this app a try too, "deep sleep hypnosis". I have chronic insomnia, and the hypnotherapy has helped me far more than any pill or supplement. I've had this device and that app for three weeks, and I've noticed that I struggle less to get to sleep now.

Also - make sure your bed is used for nothing but sleep and sex. If you do other, non restful things in bed, your mind doesn't always associate your bed as being for rest (or sex, LOL!), and will have a harder time easing into sleep. Your bedroom should be dark, and quiet, though you may find it preferable to use a fan, or radio to generate " white noise", to help you relax more easily. Have you ever had a sleep study done?

I take it, but only every once in a while. You're not supposed to take it very often or you could become dependent on it to get to sleep.
PeanutsauntieP1982 · 41-45, F
@JP1119: yep!!

Most people take too much and at the wrong time, it should be taken a few hours before bed time and at smaller doses than you find it in at the store.
My dad started taking benedryl every night to go to sleep. Meletonin didn't do anything for him.
SallyK · 46-50, F
I'll look into that. Thanks

oh i was addicted to melatonin! be careful ABOUT USING IT IT MAY HELP YOU AT FIRST BUT taking it continuously may end up with never sleeping with out it. i have some if u have ran out of it but i dont suggest it.
Subsumedpat · 36-40, M
You have to take it correctly, almost all the dosages are too high and people often take it at the wrong time. You should only take a small amount about 3 hours before bed.

I did used it long time ago , but I found it disturbing as it increased vivid dreams and it made me tired. It is stored in our bodies , it seems you need a break from taken it.
djjohnson · 41-45, M
I use it but I try not to use it unless I feel I really need it. Because it sucks when you are all out and need it.
Guess you have to try something else tonight.
i find i sleep well after i have had sex. As i dont have a woman in my life i stay on here till late in the night and i fall asleep. Next day i am drained

I took some on a recent over seas flight and it didn't do anything. Maybe I need a higher dose.
veeceekay1991 · 31-35, F
I've been taking it as I have insomnia. It's hard to tell if it really helps or if it is just a placebo effect.
Aaronfunn · 46-50, M
I use trazadone myself. It is by prescription but usually does the trick.

@curioiusinatlant: you shouldn't take melatonin all the time. Doing so causes your brain to produce less melatonin, thereby hurting you in the end. Do you use Valerian?
can I help you fall alsleep?
robertsnj · 56-60, M
yikes not so much does it help?
