Are doctors obligated to tell you that you are dying?

If they found something like blocked arteries or something, that were inoperable

Yes, it is their job and it is an unfortunate and difficult task. The doctor that I work under recently had to tell a patient who is having health issues that they have cancer and they only have 1 year and a half to live. She says it's the one thing that she'll never get used to about her profession.

They wouldn't say "you're dying", they'd just say the condition and its possible effects. Doctors are obligated to tell the truth to the patients or to someone the patients have set as responsible for them.

In the UK there are guidelines for what is known as 'End of life care'.
Basically it says that patients should be kept informed of the progression of their illness UNLESS they make it clear they don't want to know.

This in light of the investigation into what became known as 'The Liverpool pathway' investigation.

Massively controversial when it became known what was happening.

I think their duty is to the patient. They can certainly ask if the patient wants to know the results of something.

I would be livid (and quite possibly sue) if a doctor led me to believe I have a full life while I have a cancer that would kill me in months.

Yes. We all die. But it is the obligation of the doctor to tell us what they know (if we want to know it).

I would suppose. This is critical information that will literally affect your life. Time is of the essence when you are expected to pass away soon. Proper arrangements must be met and enjoying the time left is necessary.

I think they are more obligated to tell Live Happily :)

Yeah I would like to know, so I could plan out the time I have left.

We are all dying from the moment we are born so no I don’t think they are obligated to tell anyone they are dying of a specific illness although most I think would.
I suppose they evaluate your emotional state and then decide if it is in your best interest

@RooiSoosSkarlakenWitSoosSneeu not really, they have to explain why they will do the things they will have to, even if it's inoperable there are ways to ease the symptoms. Often they have to keep patients under supervision at a hospital or center or something like that. They cannot avoid telling. They just find the most appropriate way, but they tell.

If you ask, Im sure they would have to tell you the truth.
They should be.
