Have you ever had an allergic or bad reaction to Catscan Contrast or MRI Contrast?

[c=#BF0080]Was it a developed allergy or the first time you had it? What did it feel like?

I “developed” an allergy to the contrast they use for my MRI’s(gadolinium) years ago. If I need contrast I have to be prepped w/prednisone for a couple of days and the scans have to be done in a hospital. I had severe tightness in my chest and couldn’t breathe, the nurse acted as if it was in my head but the Dr told me it was a developed allergy and the next time can be fatal w/out the steroid prep.

I had a reaction to the Catscan Contrast as well, but not a common one. The warmth they say you should feel throughout your body felt like fire burning throughout my entire body. I tried to see if anyone else had a reaction online and found two people, but like me it wasn’t understood by their Dr’s. [/c]

I am very fortunate. I have had three CT scans in the past year (most recently in March), and I had my first MRI scan just two days ago, and I experienced no ill effects.

@MellyMel22 I will have an invasive procedure that will give a definite diagnosis - very unsettling.

Sorry, no reaction here other than the pleasant warming sensation 😟
MellyMel22 · F
@Quizzical [c=#BF0080]Yep! They should have a plan at the imaging places incase that happens 😒[/c]
Quizzical · 46-50, M
@MellyMel22 I totally agree... I suggest you right a letter to the hospital administrators explaining your concerns.
MellyMel22 · F
@Quizzical [c=#BF0080]Well it’s an imaging place, not the hospital. The hospital is where I go since the allergy started. But I think it’s a good idea to send one to the imaging place. [/c]
I developed itching with a small rash on my chest, they kept me for a few hours to monitor me... finally it went away...
@MellyMel22 no, but they said they just sent a report to my doctor so it's in his file

@Somewhereovertherainbow [c=#BF0080]That’s good, I’d remind them if it was necessary again to be safe. [/c]
@MellyMel22 definitely 🙂

That’s scary hope you are ok and things don’t go haywire again.

@Windysilkgirl [c=#BF0080]Thanks. I’m sure it’ll go fine, I was okay after it a few times at least 🙂[/c]
The med they used for me when they did the second part of my stress test made me deathly ill. I spent the rest of my day in ICU. The name of it was
Persantine

@Mondayschild [c=#BF0080]That’s horrible! Did you have any effects after from it too? Like long term? Is that a contrast?[/c]
@MellyMel22 yes it is a contrast and I was released that evening. I haven't had any long term effects but I do have it in my records as an allergy
MellyMel22 · F
@Mondayschild [c=#BF0080]Thank God you didn’t have long term effects! Was it a breathing thing that made you so ill?[/c]
MrsKatherineArch · 41-45, F
No, I haven’t. I’m sorry that you do.
MrsKatherineArch · 41-45, F

Exactly! @MellyMel22
Adaydreambeliever · 56-60, F
No I didn't have any reaction but.. they do make you stay for half an hour or more afterwards and so reactions can't be that uncommon
MellyMel22 · F
@Adaydreambeliever [c=#BF0080]They never made me stay 😶[/c]
Wow that is scary, never had a reaction like that before. How will they deal with it if you have to do it again?
MellyMel22 · F
@Windysilkgirl [c=#BF0080]I’ve had it done after at the hospital and I was premeditated with prednisone. It went fine but it’s still scary that there’s a chance it won’t work. [/c]
KaysHealingPath · 36-40, F
That’s horrible hun. I haven not yet developed this type of reaction.

Which reminds me I need an updated MRI
MellyMel22 · F
@KaysHealingPath [c=#BF0080]I need a few that I’ve avoided. It just feels like it’s basically the same thing over and over.

I hope yours shows all good 💜 [/c]

A coworker had a reaction to the IV contrast. He passed out
MellyMel22 · F
@Spumoni [c=#BF0080]That must’ve been craZy![/c]
Spumoni · 46-50, M
I had a CT a while back, and that's all I could think about. Then the IV was pumping away, felt like I wet my pants from that warming sensation. "Oh no, this is it"
MellyMel22 · F
@Spumoni [c=#BF0080]That’s supposed to be what you feel 😂😂😂[/c]
