Tess Holliday: Inspiration, or Thinspiration?

She's large, she's loud and proud, and she's lovely. Do you agree with Tess's message, that beauty, of any size, shape, or color is lovely? Or is she someone who oversimplifies beauty and forgets health?

There is are differences between fat-shaming (which only increases stress and may well help trigger the responses which caused a given person to overeat), fat-accepting, and fat-promoting.

We shouldn't shame ppl about their health, but, seriously, if we want lower health care costs in the US or ANY country, we have to consider our own good health to be a social responsibility.

The photo shows someone who is not only overweight, but, with fat going down over her knees from her thighs, and the overall size, I bet she weighs 400#-ish, at least. In BMI, she has to be in the worst category.

This is worse for your heart/cardiovascular system, your lungs, your joints. It is a marker for Type II Diabetes, etc.
There is nothing sexy about dying early in a misguided attempt to hide behind "acceptance" and "diversity" when you are unhealthy.

This isn't body-positive, it is fat-promoting.

Bad form, in all meanings of that phrase.

Nope. I'm sorry but body confidence and body positivity is one thing, denial that you're unhealthy is another. Be body positive enough that you take care of your body. Have body acceptance for the things you can not change, like marks on your skin, your body shape/structure, your height, your skin color, etc. Fat acceptance is just an excuse for people to shove donuts down their throats
And mashed potatoes, and pizza, bread, cheeses, sweets, and such...

I am honestly torn by these arguments. I feel the more we accept where we're at, love ourselves exactly where we meet ourselves, the greater chance we'll have at being in a better place, via accepting ourselves and our capabilities. Still, nobody should be stuck in a place of lesser health, without reason to change our thinking, because of excuses. There's so much more to it! In any case, it's up to us to decide for ourselves. @Secretgal

Some people really struggle with weight due to things out of their control like PCOS however .....we shouldn’t glorify being unhealthy and eating nothing but fast food.... but everyone should love themselves

I don't really mind her looks. But statements/"jokes" like "health is overrated" (or something similar, can't remember)...come on, Tess.

Nah. Health should come first before beauty.
It's extra nice when health and beauty work together, accentuating each other.@SW-User

Best case scenario she wears that extra fat so well she has no health concerns because she's built to handle being overweight. That's a possibility, but she would be a genetic marvel in that case and sending the message to be okay with possible obesity to other women who could easily not be so lucky isn't a great idea.
Now THAT'S insightful. @Reject

She is clearly very overweight and sure...he health may well cause her health issues.....but we dont know these facts from this picture.
As many people will look at this lady and find her attractive as wont.
Big ladies can still look and feel sexy.....why shouldnt they?
I don’t like all her horrible tattoos. Her skin looks like a public bathroom wall.
No one cares about health until a fat person dares to not hate themselves🙄

Eh mixed opinion. No one should hate themselves and more power to get if she feels comfortable with herself, that said there are health risks to obesity.

Vgore0304 · 26-30, F
