Is eating 1000 calories a day safe or do you think your body can't survive on that caloric deficit?

The eight most poorly fed nations on earth AVERAGE less than 2000 calories a day.
SimplyTracie · 26-30, F
@Mamapolo2016 I would imagine way way less than 2000 calories.
@SimplyTracie That's what I imagined, too, but it looks like we were wrong.

Even Somalia (ave daily calories per capita - 1695) and N Korea (1318) although among the worst fed, take in more than I would have expected. The problem is that calories and nourishment do not equate. As always happens when we face a serious problem, we define 'starving' endlessly instead of giving nutrition where it's needed.
SimplyTracie · 26-30, F
@Mamapolo2016 I agree. Totally different ways of looking at diets.
SimplyTracie · 26-30, F
I can survive but I wouldn’t want to. I think a typical veggie burger weighs in at about 150 cals.
SimplyTracie · 26-30, F
@justicexoxoxo Why is having a deficit important to you? Most important is a proper diet. For example, I believe you need calcium in your diet to ward off diseases like osteoporosis.
justicexoxoxo · 26-30, M
@SimplyTracie I'm trying to meet a specific weight goal. I eat lots of fruit. I do get what you're saying. It's true.
SimplyTracie · 26-30, F
@justicexoxoxo It’s a 100% confusing topic. Hundreds of dietitians around with 100’s of diets to choose from. Too many authors.

One thing I do believe in is that we should eat meat sparingly.

I read that the least, supposedly, is 1,200 per day. It depends on what you are trying to accomplish. Here is a website that might help: https://www.choosemyplate.gov/
jamieb1221 · 26-30, M
It is fully possible for you to live on that but there maybe days at first where you will feel tired a lot but yeah shouldn't be that hard on you

Survive, yes. healthy no. It's also not a great way to weight loss if that's what you're going for. At that point, your body begins to work to conserve energy and slows your metabolism down. Assuming you're burning the average 2000 calories a day, just by being alive, 1500 is about the lowest you want to go. For most people, this would set them up at about 2lbs per week.

I've survived on a lot less.
justicexoxoxo · 26-30, M
@Bruja How many calories, if you don't mind me asking?
Khenpal1 · M
depends how many calories you burn and if the food is varied. In general you will starve your organs with 1000
Khenpal1 · M
@justicexoxoxo also depends on you current weight and condition of the body . Somehow it's need to make sense , what is the purpose of eating only 1000 cal. If you are at the age where your body needs more to develop , you will suffer when you get older.
justicexoxoxo · 26-30, M
@Khenpal1 I did it a few times to lose weight. That wasn't my regular strict diet. I know that's dangerous. I did it a few days, not in a row but in total out of a few weeks.
Khenpal1 · M
@justicexoxoxo I would mean , it could make more sense in spring where after winther one could detoxify .Otherwise depends if the 1000 cal are well balanced
voxiti · 22-25, F
It's a fine amount of calories as long as most of it isn't empty calories. Typically the daily intake is meant to be over 1000, any lower can affect health negatively
DaughterOfTheDust · 22-25, F
When I used to count calories, I only ate around 1,500 a day. That’s including breakfast, lunch, dinner and snacks. Just 1000 seems a bit small, but I think 1500 is a pretty standard amount.
JoeyFoxx · 51-55, M
For a week, that might be ok. Or for someone who is small and not active.

But over a longer period of time, this is not advisable
DeWayfarer · 61-69, M
It depends on your body. I myself could not. I have a very high body metabolism and not even 2500 calories a day is enough for me.
I would recommend 1300 but I guess you could survive on 1000 considering its the right stuff
mrmoose · 70-79, M
most of the people around the world eat less
I was surprised to learn that's not actually true.

I thought it was true, too.@mrmoose
It's perfectly safe if it's the right calories.
plankter979 · 51-55, M
No - no way. Please eat healthy.
SINAI · T
You'll be fine.
