What's the point of an emergency room if you have to wait for 2-3 hours?

curmudgeon1968 · 51-55, M
you didn't say what was wrong with you that you were in the emergency room, it would be assumed to be something that was an actual emergency and not an inconvenience. (something like broken bones or lacerations)

Are you saying that it took 2-3 hours for them to triage you? Or that you had to wait for 2-3 hours for the doctor to treat you for your condition? If it is the prior then there is a problem, if it is the latter then it would depend on what you were there to be treated for. 2-3 hours to be treated for a heart attack sounds pretty life threatening. 2-3 hours for a broken leg is just painful, but is very unlikely to kill you.

Add on top of that the people who go to the ER because they didn't realize that their having a cold is not really an emergency, it clogs up the whole system.

if you are waiting that long then you are going to be fine. tjey deal with the serious life threatening stuff first

I just wish that the charge nurse isn't the most cold and uncaring in the entire hospital. They don't even want to make eye contact- much less smile.
@LucyRocks She isn't cold. She is experienced and likely tired and stressed. And she has to deal with more problems than just ill or injured people. She has to liase with physicians, handle staffing, handle complaints. She doesn't play on a cell or listen to music while she works. And she saves lives too. Imagine that!

@PoetryNEmotion There's no excuse for a complete lack of empathy in a front line representative.
@LucyRocks Let's see. Add a 12 hour shift plus likely more time. And a lack of breaks due to emergency admissions. Constant interruptions. Phones ringing off the wall. Constant noise. Girl, you have no clue about nursing in an ER. And all the people with minor problems. You want warm and fuzzy? Find a dog or kitten. Life and death means...You may as well go back to your cell.
Listen. You can wait for 8 or more if it isn't an emergency. Let's review how an emergency room operates. You come in. A triage nurse assesses you. Info is taken. This means you will be assigned a number to see a physician based upon your problem. You have to wait. People come in by ambulance too. They are seen first as they likely are emergencies. MIs aka heart attacks. CVAs aka strokes. Motor vehicle accidents. All manner of urgent cases. You should be grateful you are not seen promptly. It means you are not an emergency. You will be seen. Play on your phone. Read a book. People watch. Watch TV. Put on head phones. They are monitoring you. And if you suddenly worsen, you will be seen. And don't fake anything. And don't be loud and obnoxious. Won't make you be seen any faster. Any questions?

They take patients in life threatening medical crises first.

@fun4us2b they have too. They won't deny anyone care, but Life is priority in the way their triage works.

@SW-User Agreed - I broke my arm really badly in 2009 - they took me right in past all the people with the sniffles...
Because other people are waiting and you will be triaged in according to your symptoms
They by propriety i f you wait 3 hours MAYBE YOU SHOULD OF GONE TO A DOCTOR FIRST!!!!IF OYU WAIT THEAT LONG YOU SHOULD NOT BE IN THE EMERGENCY ROOM IN THE FIRST PLACE IT COST THOUSANDS OF DOLLARS when ppl liek yooooou abuse the system

@Elizabeth28 You don't always have a choice about going to the emergency room. I wasn't in a life threatening emergency and I had to go there... Twice.
@fluteacorn that why youo waited you went there twice for some thing minor see my point now
fluteacorn · 22-25, F
@Elizabeth28 It wasn't really minor.

Enter the need for better health care.

Your wait is so long because, along with true emergencies, you're sitting with the uninsured who want to be seen for colds, coughs, a new mole, pregnancy check-ups...you name it. They can't pay, the costs cause rises in insurance premiums, and then insurance becomes that much harder to afford. Great system, no?
