I Have Lost People I Love From Cancer

The recent losses of Aretha Franklin and Sen. John McCain brought it back to me again - that feeling of helplessness when my parents told me my mom’s cancer had reached stage 4. And that feeling of dread when they said she was stopping medical treatment.
Ah. I know. My husband. My brother. And other dear ones.

Especially between parents and children, there can be a vast gulf between what the two think of as the worst that can happen. For the young, that is death and loss. For the older who are ill, it can be trying to summon up the defiance for one more treatment.

We so want them to stay just one more day for us. They are so tired and want so to make it their choice, not something that is done to them.
