I Am Fascinated By Human Behavior

Do you think that the school shootings and other violence mainly comes from lack of discipline, especially parental discipline? One woman said that in our day (we grew up in the 80s) armed school officials meant a paddle not a gun. Lack of discipline is probably part of the problem but there's more going on than that. I told her there were plenty of spoiled brats in our day too, although it wasn't the majority like it is now.

Guns are just too dangerous to be so easily gotten in this day and age. It has become a fetish, but one that is too harmful not to control their availability. It harms no ones rights to limit how many bullets may be fired per second, and yet will obviously save lives, as has been demonstrated over and over again in mass shootings. Adults have lost their minds in this debate. Thank god for the children who see so clearly what needs to be done. And why shouldn’t they, as they see their schoolmates die.

I am thinking along the line that if people are bullied, maligned on a daily basis then they build up a hatred for mankind and need to "Get Back" at Society.
We read about the perpetrators of these mass shootings being described as weird, a loner. We all know Society shuns those "Not like themselves".
So the person shunned feels not wanted by society, becomes bitter and reacts, sometimes in horrific ways.

i don't know if it's discipline as much as it is poor parental decisions and irresponsibility. What I think might be discipline, you may think is abuse. Children who are over disciplined can be just as toxic as those lacking it.

Yes definitely. I knew the over disciplined set too. Mean kids

I don't think most kids are spoiled. The increase in violence in our society is of multiple causes. Unfortunately, the availability of weapons of mass destruction enables the end result!

@samueltyler2 Shoot most kids ARE spoiled. I work retail and see parents give in to the left and right. More often than not parents buy their child a toy every time they shop. They act like they're scared to say no and let their kids run wild.
samueltyler2 · 80-89, M
I don't define spoiled that simply, but your observation may be correct.
Cloud7593 · 46-50, F
Basically spoiled is giving special treatment and not being able to say no, essentially giving in to a child's demands.

@Saige There was someone on this site that said he is waiting for his 132nd Gun to arrive in the mail.
That is the mentality of the pro gun people that society is up against.
The Status Quo will not change. No amount of protesting is going to change gun enthusiasts minds.

I don’t really think any human behavior is new, just the tools we use. People have been people for a very long time- hearing about these things happening instantly nation wide is pretty new. To pin down a single cause is impossible- but the bad stigma of mental health treatment? Lack of treatment options? Fixing these things might go a long way.
Heck even better sex education so that kids don’t become parents before they are ready might help.
Parenting isn’t about harshness of the discipline- it’s about being constant. If the rules don’t change depending on how tired the parent is then the kid is better behaved. Stability- education- correction.
It has nothing to do with discipline in my opinion. I believe it's down to mental health, every idiot seems to have a kid these days and they don't look after them. These kids get bullied and no one does anything about it, doesn't help how easy these disturbed kids can get guns in America either.
Cloud7593 · 46-50, F
@EllieTheKittyKat yes mental health is a huge factor.
Yea. You never see these shootings in conservative Christian schools that paddle...typically from kids who have no parents or positive role in life.

That plus bullying I'd say. Glad I finished high school when I did. It seems really rough nowadays. Feel sorry for my nieces and nephews

And yet, the 80s and 90s were a much more violent time than now. Strange, that.
Cloud7593 · 46-50, F
@QuixoticSoul 80s and 90s were more violent? They started talking abt schools being violent in the 90s. I didn't think the 80s were violent but I was a child then so maybe didn't know.

@Cloud7593 Murder rate was double what it is now back then. 1980 is actually the peak, though 90s was also bad.

School shootings were more rare. Other violence was much worse.
