I Have No Problem With Interacial Relationships

With all the racial division in America how do couples in interracial relationships handle it?  The guy I'm seeing totally avoids conversation about race and he acts as if there's nothing going on. If we're watching television something comes on about racism he'll switch channels. Its getting to a point where I'm thinking do I really want to take this further. And I'm not sure how to bring the conversation up because obviously he doesn't want to talk about it.  Other than that he's a great guy.

I am a mother of 2 young black men one's a sophomore in college and one is in the Air Force . His son is Caucasian and there's no way he can understand how I'm feeling right now. I just don't want him to shrug it off like there's nothing wrong. ☹ I really don't know what to do.

If two people like/love each other the it shouldn’t matter. Race, orientation, etc. love you life, be attracted to who like, etc. Period.

@JesseInTX You're so right Jesse! Just love who you love. 🤗

I find that unusual. My college sweetheart was black (he still is...) I had never noticed racism because it had never affected me. Being with him made me see things very differently. I would think that as a mother you would need to talk to the man in your life about your concerns about your sons. How could you not? Maybe he hasn't seen the problems, but he has to face them if you want to have a future together. Otherwise you are going to end up feeling hurt and betrayed. Do you have a personal story you could tell him so you could see how he reacts? Something one of your sons went through perhaps? Just like a hey, so this happened. What do you think about it conversation.

Thanks that's a great idea. I'm gonna try that. Thanks again.

DW's advice is always: you have to have to have to have to talk about it. Talk about everything. You can have a relationship without talking but it will be much happier if you put it all out there, both of you. Say the thing that you are most scared of saying, that you think might make him leave. That is true courage. I've done it. You can, too! --DW

racial division?

?!

here in the states?

where i live there's much mixture and most of us are mixed race.

i guess you're talking those red states.

? i'm a mestizo and many of my friends are many diff. races.

?

not sure, oh sometimes we get out of towners who get all upset when they see the natives in the region.

like this past xmas again, many folks from other states were all like "what the hell are you?" and i'd just say to myself.. 'guess they're not from around here, boy are they white!'

it's kinda a joke. but you can really tell those who've not set foot in multicultural cities, towns.

it will soon penetrate their faculties, i mean we only have soo much room.
and here in the states we've been mixing it up with the 'native americans', 'blacks' and spanish-latino.... and other's who've been migrating here for the last 200 and some odd years plus.

and then some.

many wealthier countries have.. due to the ability to receive cultures and sustain them where they make their home the 'new country' whatever it may be and then plant their roots and mingle with the other cultures and settle down.

hmm, queenofquirks is right, i do answer in paragraphs. eh!

Mmm.. he may just be fed up with that conversation, knowing he can either let it stress him out or he can put it aside and get on with his life as a human being? If the only thing you try don't click on is that he changes the channel and doesn't want to talk about or get involved in politics.. I'd say you're in good shape.
PEACH4LIFE · 46-50, F
But he hasn't had that conversation with me.

I guess. I'm gonna have one conversation with him about it and then see where things goes. He's a great guy but he has to understand me too.

Heartlander · 80-89, M
It may be his way of communicating to you that his feelings for you have absolutely nothing to do with race, either his race, your race, or anyone else's race.

While he may be in love with you, he may see someone else of your same race in a totally different light, and rather than show his dislike for that person, for your sake he avoids the subject entirely.

Think of it like religiously devout parents with child that grows up t be an atheist. Whatever depth this atheist beliefs hold, he can still love his parents with all his heart and soul, and avoid hurting them by discussing religion with them.

I think you are cute enough that he should get his shit together,
I know your kids would not make any difference to me✌️

Good luck in this relationship. If two people love each other, there shouldn't be a color barrier. Do you think he switches channels to protect you? I'm thinking so...

@needsmilk808: Thanks!
Heartlander · 80-89, M
@needs .... I grew up in the deep south and after peeking at most parts of America over my lifetime I fully appreciate your observations. Racism really didn't/doesn't exist from the upper heartlands through the great northwest. There was no segregation, no forced desegregation, no perceived ill-will across color/race lines.

It's very noticeable. Crossing from Iowa/Missouri into Nebraska and the Dakotas it's like the legacy of racism is left behind. Maybe there's a buffer, in a sense, related to the Native American concentration, and I believe a bit of regret about mistreating Native Americans. And it shows now with a feeling of embracing African Americans and Native Americans, not so much as payback but as shared dignity.
PEACH4LIFE · 46-50, F
@Heartlander: I'm in the deep south as well and it's very prominent here.
