Isn't life funny, the way it knocks us around & we keep coming back for more like a battered spouse. Hopeful.

You think you have it all worked out don't you? Well, a little anyway. If you're smart you'll know that you actually know nothing. But the essentials, the basics, you're absolutely positive that you've got them down, I'm sure you are.

Then there it is, out of the blue, that thing that shakes your very foundations. That thunderbolt direct from the heavens, & it's bearing your name. It could be death, or life, love, or hate. The beginning or the end of something. Because that's all anything ever is, the beginning or the end. There is no middle after all. Yesterday you didn't know that, yesterday you were as innocent as a child. Last week you lived in blissful ignorance. But today things are different, today there is only this. No middle. No life, funny or otherwise.

Life is about putting your head down and pushing forward no matter how blindly. The brick walls, prickerbushes, death and assholes be damned. Usually it takes a while to realize that it is you that is standing still and life that is coming at you at something approaching 1,000,000 miles and hour and no matter how hard you try to fool yourself, you can't seem to do a thing about it. You simply put your head down and hope. It is all you can do and all anyone has ever been able to do. Anyone who thinks otherwise is a fool. We can deal with some of it and even make the best of most of it, sometimes successfully through our own action or inaction, but in the end you are right, there is no middle.

Sometimes I get haunted by this thought of oh ephemeral it all is. I get myself in a state of panic about loosing my loved ones. This doesn't work for anyone, specially when I try to lock them in the basement to keep them "safe". So it's like Goliath said, keep your head down, push forward and hope (and release them from the basement)
