Suggested book titles? [I Need Inspiration]

I've decided to start writing my own novel but I'd like to educate myself on old legends and myths and folklore. So I figured I'd start with book series that started it all. Frankenstein, brothers Grimm novels, King Arthur. Let me give you a brief synopsis. Mine is packed with death and tragedy, monsters and supernatural, witches, cults, etc. I want it dark and gruesome but I also want comedy. Its shrouded in mystery and cryptic dialog. Any ideas?
