I Am An Alcoholic

Whilst I am not an alcoholic, I had a fascinating conversation with my boss the other night that was quite enlightening. What she said to me went something like this....

"Y'know, I never thought of myself as an 'alcoholic' or having a drink problem; far from it, I felt that I was living the life, having a great time, and being what you would call a 'functional' drunk. Actually, drunk was far from what I thought of myself. Luckily, I had a medical 'wake up' call, but I still felt that I was OK."

"Fact is that, after a while, people came out of the Air Raid shelter of life - to stop conflict - to tell me the reality. Funny how my own reality was different to friends and family...."

"So, no, I didn't just wake up fine each morning and then start power drinking.....my husband told me that I would get terrible tremors upon waking, until I had my first drink....and no, I wasn't that functional when friends found me - literally - bouncing off of walls....and no, what I thought wax just 2 litres of Vodka a day was only just the start; friends saw me helping myself to glasses of Brandy and Wine during the day....and no, I wasn't all cool and calm...my children told me that I would snap at them in anger. Friends found me blacking out at times too. That's the reality.....not my reality..."

"So when you find what you THINK is happening to you is VERY DIFFERENT to the reality, then it is time to stop...."

..and stop she has. Just crazy to think that your perception of yourself can be so different....

.....anyways, it made me think...and I thought that I would share this with you....
