I Hate Jazz

Since I was child I have got a headache everytime I heard jazz.

Some love jazz with the same passion as I love opera but hate opera as passionately as I hate jazz.
I have hated jazz since before I knew the word jazz. Already when I was only four – five years old it caused me headaches and when I heard jazz I for my inner eye saw a picture of some sweaty and apparently suffering black musicians playing in some crowded and smoky place.
One of the big mysteries in my life is where I – especially at so young an age – got that picture into my head and also why I always connected it with jazz.
Being allergic to jazz is not always easy because there is played a lot of jazz here in Denmark. Several of the most famous jazz musicians, for instance Ben Webster, have lived in Copenhagen and Copenhagen's annual jazz festival is the biggest in Europe so at times it is impossible for me to avoid jazz but I physically suffer whenever I hear it.

Thank you for the sympathy.
If you too love opera we maybe one day will meet in in the opera somewhere. We are regular guests in the opera houses in Copenhagen and Hamburg and when we travel we always try to visit the opera so I also have enjoyed Rigoletto in Covent Garden.

That would be great! I would like to visit both the Copenhagen and Hamburg opera houses. But my next opera trip is to Berlin, next Easter.

@MartinII: I love the opera in Hamburg. Our new (relatively) in Copenhagen is great but there is something intimate and almost cosy about the opera in Hamburg. The only thing that prevents me from considering the Hamburg Opera my local opera is that we have to allocate at least two days when we visit it.
Visiting the Berliner Opera will be a great experience for you and I hope that you enjoy it.

Does your husband share your feelings regarding jazz music Karin?

@MartinII: Alfred or Albert?
MartinII · 70-79, M
@helenS: I meant Albert. I have now googled it and I seem, surprisingly enough, to have been right.

@MartinII: "Ich habe genug" is a wonderful piece of music and Hans Hotter was a great singer but I never heard him sing this cantata.
I have a DVD with Herman Prey singing it. He is one of my favourite singers but right now on your recommandation I listen to Hans Hotter and it is obvious why you recommend his version of Bach's cantata.

A shame. Many years ago I would sometimes visit a jazz pub in London. The jazz was in a separate room, but you could hear it from the bar. So you could sit in the bar, sipping your beer, and enjoy the music quietly, without getting a headache. And it was free!
