I Think We Need to Get Illegal Immigration Under Control

The reality is that anyone in Mexico who really wants to come to the US is going to come to the US. There isn't any way to stop it unless we truly start to enforce the deportation of illegal immigrants.

The way things are now, with the country so evenly divided into red vs. blue, is that the left don't want any real enforcement of immigration/deportation laws to happen, and the right want to stop anyone from Mexico from coming into the country in the first place (legally or illegally), and neither the right nor the left want to spend anywhere close to the kind of money that it would take to even make a dent in the illegal immigrant population.

So as it stands, we're caught in this ridiculous deadlock where the republican-right won't let legal immigration happen, except as an over complicated nightmare that hardly anyone is realistically going to be able to go through, and the liberal-left won't let anything be done about people who are in this country illegally. It creates this completely broken situation where we say "you absolutely cannot come into our country legally thanks to the republicans, but if you come here illegally then we won't do anything about it, thanks to the liberals." - and each side of the political spectrum actively blocks one of the 2 main solutions (actively enforce the immigration/deportation laws, or let people come here legally).

What I'd like to see happen is to completely reform the legal immigration process in order to make it accessible to most people, including people currently in Mexico who want to immigrate, and then create a long grace period during which anyone in the country illegally can go through the process of becoming a legal citizen. Make a point of advertising it so that everyone knows about it (You can bet that this kind of thing will be big news to anyone in the country illegally, so word of mouth will get it to anyone who doesn't speak English). After the long grace period is over (long enough that everyone has more than enough time to go through the process if they choose to), then there should be a crackdown on illegal immigration. Deport anyone who's here illegally, and then start actively enforcing immigration and deportation laws.

Right now, illegal immigrants have no rights. You rob them, and they can't go to the police. A boss sexually harasses them or makes them work 80 hours a week, and they have no recourse. The way things are right now doesn't work, for the country, or for the illegal immigrants themselves. It's never worked. And the blame for that falls squarely on BOTH sides of the political spectrum.
