Are tomatoes really bad for you?

According to a bunch of ads on the Internet, tomatoes are supposed to be bad; according to these ads, tomatoes cause arthritis pain. Do they really?
I'm an old lady with osteo arthritis and I eat tomatoes all the time and have never noticed my arthritis pain getting worse. I grow tomatoes in my garden every year so maybe it helps if it's organic, the way I grow them.

Anyone else here have an opinion or experience eating tomatoes? Anyone see or read those ads?

I hope not because I eat tomato salad all summer long :(
@Keepitsimple I use those spices too but add the jarred minced garlic instead of garlic powder. love a nice caprese salad in summer too
Keepitsimple · 51-55, F
@saragoodtimes Yummy! I would wind up dumping the whole jar in if I did that. I love garlic 🤦🏻‍♀️.
@Keepitsimple I put garlic in everything. making stuffed mushrooms for tonight with crabmeat, breadcrumbs, oregano, parsley, basil and grated parmesan cheese. topped with mozzarella and baked for about a half hour until the cheese is browned and the mushrooms tender

The skin and seeds make arthritics suffer
TexChik · F
@cherokeepatti no . Well one stopped and said he was gonna whoop me . I hit him too and took off ! I had to apologize to him . He turned out to be very kind . I was scared to death
cherokeepatti · 61-69, F
@TexChik your Daddy could have whooped your butt but he did the smart thing & redirected your throwing skills to throwing a softball. Took a destructive urge & turned it into something constructive.
TexChik · F
@cherokeepatti I had serious ptsd issues , they had adopted me the year before . Daddy or momma never raised a hand to me , although I deserved it a few times
Indy74 · 46-50, F
I love garden grown tomatoes.
@Indy74 if only they would hold up to shipping. don't you have any farmers markets around
Indy74 · 46-50, F
@saragoodtimes yeah, I'll get me some.
@Indy74 have farms galore here. they have the freshest and best corn and always have tomatoes out for 4 or 5 for a dollar
Degbeme · 70-79, M
I hope not because I eat them like apples. 😍
Degbeme · 70-79, M
@saragoodtimes ☺️ You`re so damn adorable. 🤗🌹
@Degbeme you're eyesight is failing but thank you😉
Degbeme · 70-79, M
@saragoodtimes Oh no it isn`t. My eyes and glasses work just fine. :*

My grandfather grew tomato's, I have fond memories of him taking me out to the garden so I could pick a tomato off the vine and eat it right there. He did this until he passed at age 101. He loved tomato's as much as I do. I have never heard they are bad for you so I haven't done any research I can only tell you that I never saw my grandfather as old as he was always active. Maybe it was the tomato's?
cherokeepatti · 61-69, F
@curiosi Neither one of my grandmothers could tolerate red tomatoes, red watermelon or any type of red fruit. One would eat only cantaloupe & the other grew yellow watermelon & yellow tomatoes. It’s the salicylates in them apparently causing problems. I have problems with certain fruits because of the acid in them, and can’t tolerate aspirin or red wine, both high in salicylate.
can't be look at how many old Italians there are
@Virgo79 so many different varieties in the market today don't need to pick wild ones. we have mushroom farms all over here. they pack for all over the country
cherokeepatti · 61-69, F
@Virgo79 I love those mushrooms. In the county where I was born in Northwestern Missouri there were some years you could find them by the bushel basket. So many that friends would get together and have “mushroom fries” in the springtime. Has to be after the ground warms up in the spring, you get a nice rain, and then the sun comes out & shines for awhile. My uncle said you could go to the places where they were common & see them popping up out of the ground. They like to grow under elm trees and oak trees.
Virgo79 · 61-69, M
@cherokeepatti i do well under dead elm and ash, apple and yes they're awesome!

Tomatoes and other nightshade plants contain solanine, which has commonly been blamed for aggravating arthritis. However, there has never been any scientific evidence to back this up. Eat your tomatoes, and make sure you're eating foods that are high in healthy fats.
AlyAngel · F
Gosh I hope not! I love tomatoes
hunkalove · 61-69, M
I have arthritis and I've been told not to eat them or potatoes. Sometimes I do and I've never noticed any bad effects.
cherokeepatti · 61-69, F
@hunkalove me neither & in the same group with tomatoes & potatoes is eggplant and all kinds of peppers. I don’t have a problem with them except for really hot peppers. Which burn my stomach & bladder.
Indy74 · 46-50, F
I also love fried green tomatoes. They are the best.
Oster1 · M
I grow tomatoes and love them. If they are not hurting you, then you are probably ok.

They are considered a “night shade plant”.

People with rheumatoid arthritis could be impacted by this. It is the inflammatory properties.

I love them
Tminus6453 · M
Its bullshit...if they're ads they are obviously trying to sell you something
greenmountaingal · 70-79, F
@Tminus6453 @Tminus6453 It's a long ad and I've never had the patience to watch the entire video/ad. But I think it's an attempt to sell you a list of foods to avoid. The idea is that if you avoid all these foods, you will be able to recover from anything from arthritis to obesity.
@Tminus6453 big pharmas got a pill for that 😁
Tminus6453 · M
I had a cousin who'd swear that they'd give her gout like symptoms. I'm not sure about what could be going on.
cherokeepatti · 61-69, F
@stound probably the salicylates in them. Both my grandmothers had problems with red fruits & veggies.
smiler2012 · 56-60
greenmountaingal would be interesting to see the data that they are using have you googled it
cherokeepatti · 61-69, F
I’ve read that they affect rheumatoid arthritis. Osteoarthritis is something different.
Carver · 31-35, F
Tomatoes are really bad for me, yes. I'm allergic. 🙃
AlyAngel · F
@Carver that blows big time
Carver · 31-35, F
@AlyAngel I can eat them cooked and in small amounts, but whole tomatoes make me swell like a toad. 🐸
Lilymoon · F
I eat tomatoes 2 or 3 times a week. I'm pretty healthy. So I dunno
acpguy · C
Maybe without cooking them, but not sure. I do know that the seeds are full of Lutein which is good for your eyes but I see in recipes quite often they want the seeds removed. So I continue to eat tomatoes raw and cooked with seeds in and I am old with bad knees, I figure I will die no matter what so I eat whatever makes me happy.
No they're very healthy
CrazyMusicLover · 31-35
I suspect I have an allergy. 😞 And I love tomatoes. I've been eating them all my life but I noticed some patterns of allergic reactions during tomato seasons in recent years. We also have organic. At least in summer.
samueltyler2 · 80-89, M
actually, it is said, the midieval and other Europeans thought tomatoes, in the nightshade family by the way, were poisonous. The licopenes in them should actually help. Perhaps you need to discuss with your physician.
Thodsis · 51-55, M
The phrase 'according to a bunch of ads on the internet' answers the question. :)
Tomatoes are the debil
