I Love Films That Make Me Think About Life

Parasite (Bong Joon-Ho, Korea, 2019).

I am not usually fond of hyperboles, but I must start my review with one. It is official, there are two kinds of movies in 2019, Korean ones and the rest.

Ki-Woo is the male son of a very poor family. He is hired as a private teacher by a very wealthy family. Then he makes a plan to have the servants and chauffeur replaced by his parents and sister.

There are dozens of films about class struggle, but very few of them explain it in such a detailed way. Seldom we see how the poor and the rich live completely different lives, and how a random atmospherical phenomenon like a thunderstorm can be a beautiful show in one case, and a disaster in the other. Or how there are traits (like their smell) that will always remind the poor of their poverty. Or how there are different degrees among the least fortunate, and petty struggles inside the class struggle.

However the story may sound, the movie is full of intelligent humour, a great cinematography, and a plot with incredible, totally unexpected twists.

A movie that grabs you by the neck, forces you to look at it and wonder who is really the parasite in our society.

"the male son"? Are there also female sons? Or any non-male sons? Do you start believing in these 57 genders nonsense? ;-)

@Cierzo That is a slippery slope, my friend. 😅

@Mugin16 The male son uses his car a lot and contributes to climate...oops 😂

@Cierzo So the male son identifies as a cis-het male then? But does he check his patriachical privilege? Especially when he encounters the rich, spoiled, pampered but still oppressed female daughter of the wealthy family? 😂

I've noticed that, and am also planning to get Snowpiercer 👍

@SW-User Snowpiercer is good too, but nowhere near Parasites.

@Cierzo Should see it first, and then that then, thanks!

Looks like a great film. I want to watch it too!

I liked that movie. The secret basement, yeah. You might like The Florida project. Good realism there.

@Success I saw the Florida project, but it was a big disappointment. The characters are nasty, and the ending was predictable and cringeworthy. Only Willem Dafoe's performance was remarkable.

@Cierzo That's what made it good. He was a nice landlord with crappy tenants.
