I Love Films That Make Me Think About Life

The Wild Pear Tree (Nuri Bilge Ceylan, Turkey, 2018)

[youtube=https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=po0vls18Koc]

One of my favorite trees where I live is a wild pear tree. It grows alone. Its fruits are bitter. It looks really destitute in winter with his bare branches, and really beautiful in spring where white flowers bloom.

Sinan comes back to his home in a small rural Turkish town after his graduation. He has dreams of becoming a teacher and publishing a book he has written. He is an idealistic young man. He finds out that his family lives under tough circumstances due to his father's (also a teacher) gambling vice rending them indebted. Also his friends have changed, they have adapted in different ways to what adult life expects from them.

Little by little (during a three hour span that does not feel long at all), we realise how Sinan's idealism is a mask hiding a conceited person who believes he is smarter and looks down on those around him (he reminded me a lot of my own self when I was that age, sigh), whereas, on the other hand, her father's cynicism and selfishness hides a strong will ready to fight for what he believes in.

Characters are far from perfect, hard to sympathise with...but maybe true human beings are like wild pear trees, their fruits are unpalatable, but now and then beautiful flowers bloom and we gaze in awe at them.

Sounds like a film two of us should watch together. With Cacaolat and cheese snacks.馃榾
