I Do Watch The News

Well I have done so more recently than before.

Today the news has basically been covering a block of flats in London on fire for about 15 hours. Started on the 2nd floor (out of approximately 20) so reduced chance of getting out alive or uninjured the further up you go.

It's a perfect indictment of lower/working class housing although I don't know if I more bothered about it because I live in a block of flats or if I would still be this bothered if I was watching from a nice house.

We have had over 48 hours of non-stop coverage of this event to the exclusion of every other news event on the planet. The media are all over it. But that's less to do with it's newsworthiness and more to do with the fact that it's in central London, and within a few minutes of every national newspaper HQ, BBC, Sky, etc. The Prime Minister and Leader of the Opposition have both turned up on the scene as have all the major dignitaries.

I wonder how much this coverage this story would have had if the flats had been in Newcastle?

@Glossy: Yeah I agree other places like Newcastle or a small town like Rugby wouldn't have gotten the coverage. But wherever it happened, it still took over 17 people to die in a fire before they worked out 'say put in your flat and essentially hope for the best' isn't a great idea.

@Glossy: ours in the us has been cut between this and our majority whip of the house of representatives in serious condition after being shot yesterday

@waleskinder: I don't know, they are saying the building has been refurbished, maybe the materials that were used that exacerbated things?
