Do You Use Prepared Jar Sauces To Make Main Dishes?

I bought a jar of Butter Chicken sauce from Aldi because I was hungry for Indian food and had been craving it. The directions said to cube up chicken, season with salt & pepper and fry it in oil & then add sauce. When I tasted the sauce it was bland & sweet. So I added 3 tablespoons of curry paste, some more salt, a spoon full of ginger powder & a fried chopped up onion….it tasted like Butter Chicken after I did all of that but thinking next time I will just make it from scratch.

I'll use jarred items if they are given to me, but mostly make my own sauces. I like knowing there isn't a lot of added crap that probably isn't even healthy...and making my own means making it my way. :)

I do but I go online and explore because I don't like supermarket stuff anyways, it's more like [c=1F5E00]soylent green[/c] type stuff. Personally, I like to enter different search terms and see what I find. There's things like etsy and then a few other similar sites, even Amazon has cool stuff if you search for it.

Then there's specialty online stores.

Here's a few examples of what I like to get from time to time:

https://havenskitchen.com/

www.thrivemarket.com (has all sorts of condiments and stuff)

Then I haven't tried this but I was just browsing and this seemed delicious, I'll probably get it:

Hmmmm yummy. I feel like a good seafood boil.

I have never used jar sauce for anything. My grandmother was 100% sicilian Italian and would roll over in her grave if I used jar sauce

No, I always make myself as those jars are always bland

waste of time, at least next time you know the ingredients are fresh
cherokeepatti · 61-69, F
@Mellowgirl I didn’t take a photo last night of what I made…Butter Chicken, Cumin Rice, Chopped Salad and Cardamom Iced Sweet Tea. Sometimes I take photos if I have time.
Mellowgirl · 31-35, F
@cherokeepatti now you're teasing
cherokeepatti · 61-69, F
@Mellowgirl nope, that’s what I made for dinner. I usually use Earl Grey tea for iced sweet tea but we ran out and haven’t bought another box of it yet.

No, I avoid prepared anything.

@curiosi Pakistani restaurant sells butter chicken here but small portion and what I made last night was as good as theirs. I made twice as much for about half the cost of one of their servings.

I do, but only because I’m crap at cooking. Aldi do curry sauces that come with a little pot of spices to marinade the meat first - they’re quite tasty
cherokeepatti · 61-69, F
@SW-User I haven’t seen any sauces with marinade spice packets.
SW-User
@cherokeepatti they’re like little plastic tubs that sit on top of the lid - I’d recommend them…but I will warn you that I don’t have the most sophisticated palette 😂

I do. I like the Rogan Josh curry. After many times making it and testing to find the right accompaniment of veg and spices I looked at the ingredients and noticed I could have made it from scratch with what I added..
cherokeepatti · 61-69, F
@Thevy29 yeah I think I just lacked yogurt and maybe cilantro. I need to look up the recipe.
I've been doctoring store bought sauces for years when I don't have time or am missing ingredients.

@MistyCee I’m starving for a Indian food from a good restaurant. My favorite Indian restaurant is no good any more because their original cook, a lady from India, retired and they hired Mexican men to take her place. They need someone who lived in India and knows exactly what the food is supposed to taste like.
@cherokeepatti My favorite local Indian place closed down during Covid and I'm searching for a new one as well.

For some reason, it seems like all the new places are Thai or Vietnamese around here, which is fine, but not the same.

Aldi korma sauce is really good too
cherokeepatti · 61-69, F
@SW-User does it taste sweet?
SW-User
@cherokeepatti a little bit
BalmyNites · F
Too much sugar 😖
cherokeepatti · 61-69, F
@BalmyNites I don’t why they would put sugar in a sauce for Butter Chicken. Maybe I’ll ask them why they did it. It’s like some jarred spaghetti sauces, that sugary flavor is unnatural for spaghetti sauce.
BalmyNites · F
@cherokeepatti Darling, everything has sugar & salt in, even cereals; it’s very bad & no wonder the kids are becoming obese/diabetes rates through the roof. I agree - who the hell wants a sweet taste to a savoury meal?
FreeSpirit1 · 51-55, F
For some dishes yes.

I used to buy pre-prepared spaghetti and Indian sauces. I have been making my own for the past 12 or so years. There really is a huge difference. Every ingredient matters.
SW-User
I stick to the same brand of spaghetti sauce.
I usually make all my other ones.
And condensed creamed soup is banned from my house.
I just make a white sauce and add mushrooms or celery to it.

Sometimes i do yes.
