Has anyone consumed dolphin/whale

What does it taste like? Is it similar to high grade tuna?
curiosi · 61-69, F
We call it mahi mahi as people didn't want to eat dolphin as it brought up images of Flipper. It's a different fish it's not bottle nose dolphins. Anyways, it's a light tasting fish, not really like tuna but not fishy.

@curiosi if dolphins are considered “least concern” by conservation groups and have minimal predators i dont see why we cant supplement even a small amount of dolphin to replace our depleting tuna populations.

Not fishy..👍️@curiosi

Dolphin, the mammal, is a protected species. There is a dolphin fish, nowadays usually referred to as mahi mahi, which I think is quite good. But it is not related to whale at all. (Nor is it related to the mammal, dolphin. )

I grew up learning that the Innuits eat whale, but I do not know if that is really true, or if it was true and is no longer. I have never had it.

@DrWatson why are dolphins protected if they are considered least concern by conservation groups? I believe they do eat whale, they need the blubber and also whales/seals are all they have to consume. I’d love to consume a non threatened species to reduce my consumption of threatened species while also experimenting with food.

@Sadwithasmile Dolphins are a highly intelligent species. They even communicate via language, consisting of beeping noises that they make. So an international agreement was passed in the UN, as well as laws withing the United States, not to kill them for food.

@DrWatson lovely, the un protects dolphins but cant protect humans from being slaughtered by their or other governments. The un truly is the embodiment of the league of nations.

I ate mahi-mahi in Hawaii for yrs...forgot the taste:-)
Sadwithasmile · 22-25, M
@Wiseacre I thought they had the south of france?

@Sadwithasmile Mahi mahi is what is also known as the dolphin fish. These days they say mahi mahi a lot more often in order to avoid confusion with the mammal we now call dolphin.
What we typically call dolphins were initially called porpoises, and are mammals related to whales.

@DragonFruit more an american thing i take it.
😲 Poor Flipper and Free Willy 😭
DrWatson · 70-79, M
@HootyTheNightOwl People eat the fish called dolphin, not the mammal called dolphin. They are two different things. Flipper is safe!

I am not so sure about Willy though.
Sadwithasmile · 22-25, M
@DrWatson i mean the mammal.
Sadwithasmile · 22-25, M
@HootyTheNightOwl sucks to be them, pass the sushi
Sadwithasmile · 22-25, M
Just i mean the dolphin the mammal not the fish.
