Plenty of meat still. However, I have lived in poverty and you learn to stretch out your meat a little better. Some people just don't know how to cook.

@cherokeepatti Good for you...but get ready. When he hits his teens he will probably eat like 4 boys for a while...😉
cherokeepatti · 61-69, F
@4meAndyou That’s a bit worrisome 😓
4meAndyou · F
@cherokeepatti LOTS of filler. BIG pots of soup with veggies, cornbread with the soup...you will be able to handle it...no fear.

Mostly the quantity and selections of meats is down. Inexpensive meats are in short supply....still there but not is the quantities I am used to seeing. Some shortages of hamburger. Usually our markets sell reg. hamburger, 70% fat free Ground Beef, and 80% fat free ground beef. The Ground beef is hard to come by.

Texas is choc full o meat . Beef prices for producers is still low ... so there’s plenty of supply . It’s demand . Processors aren’t buying because consumers aren’t buying as much right now

I have been a complete vegetarian from 21 years. There are also number of natural ways to fulfill your requirement of protein. It's easily managed here, because large part of population are vegetarians.
My personal choice include soyabean and oats.

@ABCDEF7 Not often. Soy bothers my stomach a little bit, and steel cut oats for breakfast is like eating a bowl full of cherry bombs...😂. I eat the oatmeal like cereal in the morning, with a little coconut milk, usually...but I have switched to spelt berries now because they don't kill my tummy.
The last time I fixed tofu, I was following a vegan recipe that was supposed to taste like feta cheese. It tasted like kalamata olives instead.
But I don't mind eating tofu. My favorite favorite tofu dish is firm sliced tofu with VERY garlicky black bean sauce and blanched green onions.

ground beef was nearly $7 at a local grocer butcher counter, I bought 2 pounds anyway, it had been about $3.50 for a pound. So doubled in price. I just use about a half-pound on pizzas that I make. It’ll be mostly chicken cooked various ways or salmon patties or egg or bean dishes, and we have some frozen beef to use up too. If the price doesn’t go down we won’t eat beef that often any more.

It probably doesn't hurt to get more protein from non-meat sources.

Beans on toast
4meAndyou · F
@TheSirfurryanimalWales 😂 Yes, I saw photos of that, actually...or the US army also used to serve dried chipped beef on toast...and the service men used to call it "Sh!t on a Shingle!" 😂
cherokeepatti · 61-69, F
@4meAndyou I like that, used to make it for a simple dinner when we didn’t have much $ & make homemade biscuits to go with it.
4meAndyou · F
@cherokeepatti That was probably really good!! Don't forget Stretch for breakfast. Take your own homemade bread, gluten free, and lay slices of cheese on each piece of bread in a casserole pan. Fill the pan with milk and egg mixture...about one egg for each piece of bread...and let it sit in the fridge overnight. In the morning, pop it in a 350 oven for about 45 minutes.

Not in Illinois, thankfully. Not yet, at least.

We have a freezer full, so I haven't ordered much meat from instacart, but it appears to be available
JoePourMan · 61-69, M
@4meAndyou we buy organic raised beef buy the half, so we're good for quite a while, especially since we are not having guests every weekend like usual
4meAndyou · F
@JoePourMan I buy organic, too, normally, especially for beef.
JoePourMan · 61-69, M
@4meAndyou it is the best

I think some people tried so the government put out an announcement telling the public exactly how much meat there is. We export a lot to USA so we have some to spare.
Itsmrsockmonkey · M
There's a lot of meat here in S.C...Also plenty of beans and such
4meAndyou · F
@Itsmrsockmonkey Good!!! Glad to hear it!! Get ready...because several huge meat plants have shut down.
Itsmrsockmonkey · M
@4meAndyou a majority of farms sell produce in the stores and some beside the road. S.C. has an over abundance of deer and hitting deer with vehicles is the biggest claims on insurance. Lots of deer meat to get if you like venison, just have to pay the processors. I was ready for all this anyway.
4meAndyou · F
@Itsmrsockmonkey Good!! Really glad to hear it. I have an SW friend who lives in Michigan, and he hunts also. Got a deer last year...so he is also okay.
cherokeepatti · 61-69, F
I am a fixin’ to find out, am going to a local grocery store to buy some ground beef off the meat counter.
People are buying freezers & 3yrs worth of meat. Really ridiculous.
4meAndyou · F
@DarlingSelah It's really nuts. Most meat won't keep for three years in a freezer.
MarineBob · 56-60, M

@4meAndyou vegetable soup made from scratch is really good too. I used to make it when I had a garden & would go pick the veggies & dig up some potatoes. Didn’t want or need meat when I had that soup.
4meAndyou · F
@cherokeepatti I have a recipe similar to that...called Farmer's Market Delight Soup. SO chock full of veggies and barley even the ex used to love it.

Too much corn robs you of vitamins unless you turn it into hominy first.
Rice and beans dies the same thing but without the need to pretreat.

@4meAndyou I found that out years ago.. I forget the mechanism but corn has certain B Vitamins in it but our bodies can't use then in the form they are in. So our metabolic process and enzymes take that form in, but it can't be used but by doing so it displaces the absorption rate of the useable form from other foods. When its treated with lye it and made into grits the vitamins are able to absorbed and used.
I might not have it exactly eight but works something close to that. Its been a while since I learned this so a little rusty on exactly how it works.
