How much do you usually tip at a restaurant? And what country are you in?

I usually tip 20% in the USA
Northwest · M
In my city, it's becoming more common to add a 20% service charge, that gets divided among the service/kitchen staff. Otherwise, it depends on the service, starting at 15%.

Last weekend, I was having lunch with a date. She had to ask for tea a half dozen times, the waiter got my order wrong. I asked for a prawn salad, he brought a chicken dish. We waited 45 minutes for our food, and when the bill came, he had charged me for the chicken dish on top of the prawn salad. I did not want a dessert, but he dropped a complementary one (for our trouble), that neither of us wanted, only to find that I was charged for it anyway. I did not see it until after he ran my card. When I complained, he said they will fix it later.

Even with all that, I felt compelled to tip him 15%. I worked my way through college, doing all sorts of jobs, including waiting tables.

@Northwest nice guy!
I live in Australia and we are not obliged to tip. That's what wages are for.
However, we do let them keep the change if its a few dollars.

@Robynthebeautiful good to know for when I’m in Australia!

I typically tip at least 30%, sometimes more. I live in the US
Cowboybob · M
@Effloresce wow. That’s super generous!

20% always. Tipping is stupid but I won't personally change the practice if I stiff the server. I'm Canadian.

People need to understand that in the US wait staff makes way under minimum wage. Most people I know make about $20 a week in salary. They literally lived off their tips. So unless the server is downright rude, I leave at least 20 per cent

Well I usually don’t since my parents pay, Texas
Deadcutie · 18-21, F
@Cowboybob well then my husband would
Cowboybob · M
@Deadcutie lol. Who’s a princess now?
Deadcutie · 18-21, F
@Cowboybob what does that mean?
JovialPlutonian · 36-40, M
I use to give a 10% but now I give it to homeless as big rich businesses need it less than the homeless.
Cowboybob · M
@JovialPlutonian I think tips go to the server and not a corporation. Also most restaurants are family owned unless they are chains.

Somewhere in Europe, I only tip when there is a good service. Our waiters aren’t underpaid like in the US, that’s why.

US. I don't go by percentage, I'll usually leave $5-10.
MarineBob · 56-60, M
USA depends on the service, normally more than I should
Virgo79 · 61-69, M
Depends on the service and attitude, not the price
gmatthewb · 51-55, M
Depends upon the service 15-20% Canada
Cowboybob · M
@bowman81 seems to be the most common answer
Bubbles · 36-40, F
I tip according to service. The better the service the better the tip. I live in the US
Wow! I thought 15% was enough (for a Canadian, actually, it's probably pretty generous)
