Huh....Oranges are actually man made

they are hybrids of mandarins and a fruit called a pomelo. its crazy to think that common popular produce like oranges are man made and stuff like corn, watermelons, and bananas are extremely modified from either ancient versions, or just have more "wild" variations that just look nothing like them , wild bananas can look insanely different.
If you have seen the guy (who got traction on Dr. Oz) going around showing wheat from long ago and wheat now...yawn.

Gregor Mendel might have described simple 2-gene inheritance, but he was part of what farmers/raisers of livestock, etc., have done forever: tinkering at trying to improve "good" characteristics and/or suppress "bad" ones.

If you look at apples, they apparently came out of Central Asia, and had a huge number of varieties, most of which probably wouldn't like to eat.

And apples illustrate that crosses are not only created by people: the Red Delicious variety was a serendipitous thing found by a farmer in a field and submitted to the Stark Brothers' contest...you shoukd read about it.

The difference now is that, if we sequence genomes and try to identify the parts which give, say, taste, or disease resistance or whatever, THIS level of control (gene editing) is a completely new level of trying to guide things, and seems more like à la carte dining than "traditional" crossing (which is to combine and then check the results, and keep selecting, repeating, etc.).

If you compare human selection with natural selection, we try to nudge things in ways helpful to us; hence, working dogs, hunting dogs, guard dogs, dogs for rich...ladies'...purses.

But think of how much more quickly and precisely a process might be if it WERE like ordering from a menu!

Thus, the notion of Frankenbabies: choose blond(e) hair, blue eyes, tall, handsome/beautiful, bigger penis/boobs, chiseled/beautiful face, stronger, etc., with no markers for vasculatory, diseases, senility, etc., longer life, ...

All part of Genetically Modified Organisms, we've been modifying plants and animals (livestock etc.) since we knew how to.

Corn was hybridized and created in the form we know today by Native Americans, who kept the seeds of larger and larger varieties of a grass that grew commonly in ancient times. By careful selection of their genetic favorites, they were able to transform a common grass to juicy heads huge cobs of maize.

Grapefruit and the common type of carrots and broccoli too. Even wheat has been hybridized.
