What exactly do Americans consider to be lemonade?

Because here it's a fizzy drink like Sprite or 7 Up.
BlueMetalChick · 26-30, F
You're wrong and you should feel bad. Sprite and 7 Up are lemon-lime flavored sodas, not lemonade. Lemonade is a mixture of lemon juice and water, with added sugar, and NO CARBONATION. If it's fizzy, it ain't lemonade.

@SW-User lol, I don't think she's being defensive. But comparing a fizzy drink to a good, iced homemade lemonade is a huge gap.
BlueMetalChick · 26-30, F
@xRedx I'll buy you a lemonade with one of the credit cards I stole 😉
xRedx · M
@BlueMetalChick ha, I almost forgot. No hard feelings. Just make sure they don't forget the straw 😬
butterfly1013 · 26-30, F
Sugar, lemons and/or lemon juice and water mixed together.... you can add other stuff if you'd like, but that's the traditional american lemonade as far as I know.
SW-User
@BlueMetalChick Yes, good idea.
BlueMetalChick · 26-30, F
@SW-User Imagine other fruit juices, like orange juice or pineapple juice. Lemonade is the lemon equivalent of those.

I'm gonna call up some images from Google right now.
BlueMetalChick · 26-30, F
@SW-User This is lemon water. It's ice water with some slices of lemon soaking in it, to give it a slight hint of a lemony flavor while still mostly just tasting like water.

This is a lemonade. It has a MUCH higher concentration of lemon juice as opposed to water, meaning it tastes very strong like lemons. The reason sugar is added is because having this much lemon juice in the water would make it a little too bitter, so a small portion of sugar is added to eliminate that. It tastes strongly tart, like a combination of sour with some sweet.

And this is a Sprite, which is carbonated water that has had lemon and lime flavored syrups mixed into it. It is clear, and has bubbles.

@butterfly1013 We don't have those here. But I saw those in Hawaii, but they were called shaved ice.
@SW-User Same thing.

Lemonade is not fizzy
SW-User
@abe182 I am aware of that. But they seem very defensive over the issue.
abe182 · 46-50, M
@SW-User yeah you called it lame. And we drink our beer and soda cold too.
DragonFruit · 61-69, M
@SW-User Not true....”Traditional Lemonade” (which is not carbonated) originated in India (where lemons and sugar cane were found). The traditional lemonade was modified in some places to substitute sparkling water for the non-carbonated water. The “American” version is actually the traditional version....the UK and Australia are the places where “clear lemonade” as opposed to “cloudy lemonade” (traditional) are the dominant type. You might be confused....but not because the “American” version is confusing.

SW-User
@Randy4944 That sounds kind of lame.
abe182 · 46-50, M
@SW-User that's lemonade
BlueMetalChick · 26-30, F
@SW-User It's strong and sour and much better than Sprite of 7 Up because of the lack of carbonation, so fuck you saying it's lame.
mrwhiterabbit · 46-50, M
Aaah, this is a very important question. Lemonade here in the states is (at its best) a lightly sweetened juice drink. Lemon juice simple syrup and flat (NO FIZZ) water to taste.

You can of course infuse other flavors into this base the most common being strawberry or raspberry but other flavors work as well.
SW-User
@mrwhiterabbit So it's just flavoured water.
mrwhiterabbit · 46-50, M
@SW-User as much as orange juice is flavored water. yes.
xRedx · M
That ain't no lemonade, that's lame
SW-User
@xRedx You're lame 🙄
xRedx · M
@SW-User pfftt 😒
DragonFruit · 61-69, M
Basically the same thing without sparkling water....lemon juice, sugar and water.
When sparkling water is used, we’d call that a lemonade fizzy or lemonade soda.
SW-User
@DragonFruit You Yanks are so confusing.
BlueMetalChick · 26-30, F
@SW-User America is ass backwards on a lot of things and the rest of the world is often correct about it but in this case, the yanks are completely correct. Lemonade is not fizzy.
rhouse · 56-60, M
Drink made with lemons, water, and sugar.
SW-User
@rhouse I see.
rhouse · 56-60, M
Don't hold it against the Americans. We are new to the language in comparison.@SW-User
SW-User
@rhouse That explains the overzealous dictionary writers then, trying to make English their own.
SW-User
Where is "here"
SW-User
@SW-User New Zealand, although it might apply to a lot more of the English speaking world for all I know.
rhouse · 56-60, M
It was one of the unusual things I encountered when I moved to England and traveled through Europe. I came to discover Americans were different (wierd).@SW-User
