well … one first needs to find out exactly how much of the donation will go to the cause. purportedly, i've heard only 7% goes to the actual cause … vast majority goes to advertising and large pockets of the 'agencies'.
for instance … the commercials seen on television … orphan children in foreign countries … someone has to pay for that actor standing with the children (his endorsement, and hotel/accom/flight, etc.) … someone has to pay for air-time on television/syndicates … someone has to pay the agency's costs … etc.
last year, think i also stated i'd donate to st.judes (same as member @waleskinder). lately, i am thinking more along the lines of college scholarships (maybe undergraduates). have to do more research along that venue.
for instance … the scholarship could not be used for room&board … the school could not deem a certain person inappropriately … the scholarship could be used only for registration and could not be used for tuition.
my thinking is to give impoverished and destitute principles the chance to struggle toward their horizon. i definitely don't want bureaucracy handling my money … covertly slipping it into their own pockets.
so … out of [c=#800000]$100k[/c] … would $5k suffice for each student? $5k for two students is $10k for that year. inside of ten years, $100k would be exhausted. still … it has helped 20 students toward a brighter future.
[c=#800000]>>>[/c] a future [c=#800000]teacher[/c] who never imagined they could help students attain their dreams.
[c=#800000]>>>[/c] a future [c=#800000]engineer[/c] … who just wants to make a difference.
[c=#800000]>>>[/c] a future [c=#800000]biologist[/c] has a vision to stop one enzyme which starts a new generation searching for cure to cancer.
[c=#800000]>>>[/c] a future [c=#800000]artist[/c] … blind from birth … produces immaculate designs … proving to others they also can draw.
in the end, the above examples can be realized … through one person's noble donation.

@muffinman I would build and manage my animal rescue.

I would give it to a home for abused women and their children, there are plenty to choose from, but also not enough.

@HeavenBesideYou I agree. It's one of those causes that never seem to be solved.

I’m too torn on giving it away to local animal shelters and supporting afterschool programs for kids.

Improvement in foster care. Those kids can sometimes live a horrible life yet I'm too scared to try and be a foster parent.

@SW-User When you put your heart into it, it's not that scary.

@Madeleine If my wife and I ever get on solid footing again... we will talk about it.

I wouldn't donate to a charity. I'd use it to assist a family with their child's medical expenses.
