I Love Old Buildings

There is something about entering an old house ,especially a derelict one ...you can see how they used to live and find clues to their way of life and it takes you back to that time...it's fascinating

I agree and have some treasured childhood memories of looking in a few long abandoned homes with my parents. Recently, I've enjoyed browsing through pics and video of "urban explorers". It is intriguing to wonder about the reasons for abandonment. The few homes which I saw as a child had been in an area bought out and mostly turned into a public recreation lake, beach, trails, etc. They were in the woods and rarely (if ever) found by visitors though.

My upper school used to occupy buildings on totally separate sites well over a mile apart, and one was a strange, rambling old place, probably 19C, perhaps 18C.

It was called Connaught House but I have no idea if was built as a school or as a house.

It was not derelict of course, as we were using it, and a few rooms on the first floor were occupied separately as a flat; but it had a lot of unused rooms plus corridors and staircases leading... somewhere. ("Just for fun"?) There was even a disused bathroom just outside my class-room.

I'd love to have been able to explore it, and know a bit more about it.

Ours was the last generation to use it as we moved to brand-new, purpose-built, superbly-equipped school buildings - of which half were recently demolished! Connaught House is all gone now, I believe, swept away to make room for yet another clone housing-estate. Maybe next time I drive past, I will take a little detour.

Thank-you for the heart - usually I use a message for thanks but you request no PMs.

I agree with this. They sometimes have an atmosphere...the residue of past function.

Yes, it is!

My ancestor's house where I am living inside is about 500 years old. All the ancient walls, pictures etc. - it is a really fascinating part of family history for me. :-)

I derive some sentimental feelings from that even though I never lived in the place
