I Love Storms

If you are familiar with the Lone Cypress Tree in Pebble Beach, California, just know that it lost one of its iconic limbs during this last storm.

Is been crazy for all of us with high winds & heavy rains. With downed lines and outages everywhere.

Pebble Beach, where my husband and I live with a friend who just lost hers, is, I guess, what you would call a "gated city." Many celebrities have homes here, and tourists like to drive by and see these grand estates. (Note that I'm grateful to be up on the mountain, away from all that)

Tuesday night was a rough one. We could feel the house rocking and the cat never climbed out from under the covers. When we woke up Wednesday morning to head into the office, there were many trees downed, some over the roads. Luckily, we were in our small Toyota pick up and were able to drive under a couple of them. The others would make us turn around and go the other way. Luckily, we were finally able to get through our gate and head off onto the highway.

Coming home that night was another story. My husband called me at work saying that we couldn't use our normal exit coming home, we'd need to go in a different gate. So we planned ahead and went through what we thought would be a good detour. We got to the gate only to find a large tree layed over the squashed kiosk and a mini van that had obviously just pulled up beside it. (Later found out that both the guard and the woman got out ok, as did the two young children in the car, thankfully).

We turned around and went through another gate, no problem, but the ride home was another story. I swear it took us an hour to get home on a trip that normally takes 15 minutes!!

Amongst the trees were passed four (that we knew of, before being roadblocked by signs) that had fallen across the street and two had landed in resident garages. When we got to our driveway, a tree had fallen from a neighbor's home and into the power line at the street near our driveway, causing the power outage.

When coming home this evening, we found another tree that was downed today onto someone's home. Luckily, these people hadn't been here in a while, along with one of those that hit the garage, as they were at their winter homes.

This evening, our power plant trucks were working on our lines and got it back at about 8:30. My husband was in the driveway getting something out of the truck. We decided to leave the house lights off, turn the porch light on, and see if he'd notice. Nope.

We busted up laughing as I turned the house lights on and he just didn't get it until we explained about the porch light, them he laughed with us.

We are now safe, warm, and lit. I just hope everyone else is, too.

While we do love our storms, it's just ones like this that remind us of how much at risk we are with the things that we love.

Glad that you are safe now - the world feels fragile after a storm like that
