I Remember Life Before the Internet

How was it? In the dark ages
chaoticdreams · 46-50, M
Life before the internet was made a household necessity was a lot more simple. People had to actually think for themselves and do real research. It was a time of exploration, getting kicked out of the house for 3-4 hours a day after school so one could experience the outdoors and real social interaction. Best of all it was the era of thick skin; getting bullied was a right of passage and kids either grew stronger because of it or grew up to be office dorks and yes men. Oh to be back in the 70’s and 80’s...

I don’t think I had a real computer until ‘83 and the internet I don’t think showed up until AOL which maybe was around 85, but it wasn’t a household thing until the 90’s really as far as I can remember; at least not for me anyway.

I think life before internet is more romantic bcoz they used love letters before.but now?just chat etc..
Scarfface · 46-50, M
I think I was more social, if I wanted anything, I'd go get it. Now I just go on the Internet 😢

well, people spoke in person more... and by phone. Harder to connect with lost connections. Could shop remotely thru Sears catalog sales. Phone was much more expensive for long distance before VoIP, etc.

@Neoerectus agree
our porn was in magazines
we wrote letters or made phone calls on telephones that were connected to the wall by a cord

I watched tv on a schedule set by the networks

and there were in black and white when I first started

I was a kid in the 70s. I had to use my imagination when I played. Video games did not exist then. Neither did cds or dvds. It was a different time. We had to think to figure things out. Like how yo count back change. If something cost $3.61 and we have the clerk a $5.00 we had to manually do the math in our heads to get the the right change. $0.39 =$4.00+$1.00=5.00. Now registers figure that out automatically or someone pulls out their phone.

We had to think for ourselves before the internet. In a way the internet made us dumb. But I’m glad we have it.

Awesome, multiplayer games meant, your friends came over to your house and it was always fun 😁
hunkalove · 61-69, M
A better world, that's for sure.
lilida · 22-25, F
@hunkalove why?
hunkalove · 61-69, M
@lilida People went places and talked to each other. 99% of what is on the Internet is a total waste of time.

Kids played outside till after dark. If you discussed someone's cell they had been arrested. If someone hit on you it left bruises. When you did a report, you had to go to a library and do the research in "books". You typed it on a typewriter and if you made a mistake you either used white-out and typed over it (teachers usually didn't allow this) you used erasable bond paper that let you erase and then realign and type the correct word or you just started over.
Spell check was in a dictionary and no auto-correct (that may have been a good thing).

Newspapers were thicker, had to listen to the radio late at night to get the sports scores. Talked on the phone instead of texting. Was less distracted when out because you didn’t have cellphones back then

@crystalkid people talked to each face to face in kind manners

Easier to enjoy life. The internet is flooded with bad news. It's sometimes hard to simply enjoy life.

A lot more intelligent people, less fake news and a lot less snowflakes.
MrGoodbar · 51-55, M

It was awesome.
A lot harder to find collectibles.
acpguy · C
@LittleBlueAngelBoy Not so, in the 60's I was collecting coins from the 1800's; silver dollars, halves, nickels and dimes. I even found a couple of half dimes. Baseball cards were easy to get and cheap and sell for a fortune now. There was a lot of old furniture that went for a song and the bikes from that era now sell for a premium. Collectibles today are hard to find and over priced compare to the 60's and earlier. My Mom collected gold coins during the 30's and 40'which were common then and worth a lot more today as gold was only $25 per ounce then.
