I Am a Huge Animal Lover

This afternoon, I went for a hike to the park in the center of the city just 2 km away from home. I was swinging on the swings, thinking about some things regarding life, and I noticed this bird that fell from a tree.

It was a baby swallow. Its back was hurt, and out of nowhere, a white cat came to try to eat it. The poor thing was struggling to run away but couldn't run or fly. I immediately ran off to chase away the cat and took the bird in my hand.

It was real freaked out and it screeched a lot. I was stressed because I thought people will get the wrong idea, but I pet it on the head for a minute and it calmed down. I also gave it a subtle belly rub and took it all the way home.

My parents said I can't keep it and I'd have to take it to a vet to heal it, but I couldn't do that since it's pretty expensive, so I let it walk around in our garden. Some four hours later, its mother found it and took it with herself. I managed to rescue the poor thing! :)

Great story. Thanks for sharing.

I have a similar story with a Starling family that tried build a home in our dryer outflow vent.

The starlings were newly hatched, still mostly featherless with their nest completely destroyed after a 10' fall onto concrete. Two of the chicks were still alive but one unfortunately didn't survive the fall.

We reassembled the nest in a large flower pot with as much of the fragments of the old nest material that we could find, and re-nested the two chicks in a more secure location on our deck.

After about 2 days of feeding them water through a small straw, mom and pop made their appearance, joined in, and took over from us completely. I suspect that they had been watching the whole while.

Mom and pop accepted us as friends, and our nearby presence didn't disturb their tending to and raising their chicks.

Watching the parenting was a big treat. Absolute devotion and amazing coordination by the parents. They looked over their chicks like hawks. Watching them transition to flight was a special treat. The chicks were "sprung" one at a time, with the parents devoted to getting one chick airborne while expecting the other chick to behave itself and stay in the nest and await its turn.

The transition from nest-bound to airborne took a few days. Flights of a few feet and rest, repeat, repeat. Overnight they had to hide the chick.

Every time I see a brown winged starling I wonder if it's JR or Bud :)

@Heartlander Awesome! I'm always happy to hear that there are people to take such good care of animals. I'm sorry about the one that passed away though, nature can be cruel.. but you managed to save the rest and that's still plenty.

I do admit though, that the only animals I dislike are cats, and I'd probably not give them the same kindness I did to the bird because of how insensitive they are to others. I know it's a bias, but I don't know how to value cats like other animals.
Gandhi once said 'The greatness of a nation can be judged by the way its animals are treated.”

So can the heart of a person.
I don’t.
