I Play With Words

[c=#BF0000]THE GRUESOME TRUTH

The origin of some common sporting idioms

HE TOOK HIS EYE OFF THE BALL
A particularly vicious delivery removed the right eye of the batsman, which adhered to the ball. As the batsman retrieved his organ, the commentator was heard to make the above remark

HE LOST HIS LEG STUMP
This batsman had already had his left leg amputated following a complicated break sustained when facing an Australian fast bowler. In a tragic coincidence, the same bowler "finished the job" with a slightly higher delivery in another match two years later.

HE WAS BROUGHT DOWN IN THE BOX
This same batsman also liked to play football. At the first match of the season, with his cricketing injuries, it was somewhat difficult to go down to the changing rooms from the pitch. The box proved useful on this occasion.

HE HIT THE BAR
After giving away several matches by missing his penalty shootout kick in every international match over the last five years, this striker turned to alcohol

HE SHOT INTO THE CROWD
This horrific drink-fuelled incident followed. Arrested immediately and stripped of the pistol he had hidden in his shorts, the unhappy striker is serving a life sentence

HE TOOK A LEFT TO THE TEMPLE, AND FINALLY ENDED UP AT THE HOSPITAL
This unfortunate boxer missed the fight as he was unable to locate the venue

HE KICKED HIS TEAM TO VICTORY
A skilled but brutal rugby captain secures a win, but at a cost. Fourteen players were admitted to hospital with severe bruising.

OVER!
A term the cricket umpire uses to indicate that the match is not over

And finally...

HE HAS THE BALL - HE'S NOW ONLY A FEW YARDS FROM THE GOALMOUTH, WiTH ONLY THE GOALKEEPER TO BEAT - HE TAKES HIS SHOT - AND SCORES! YES, SCORES! SCORES OF FANS IN THE CROWD BEHIND THE GOAL BOO AND HISS AND JEER AT THIS IDIOT WHO SHOOTS FROM THREE YARDS OUT AND MANAGES TO MISS THE OPEN GOAL BY ABOUT TEN YARDS TO THE LEFT
He was fired.

@Mamapolo2016 This was inspired by a woman sports commentator on te BBC sports news who said that a player had "slotted the ball from the tee". I did a poll among my facebook friends to see which sport they thought she was talking about. They all said golf. In fact she was talking about a penalty kick in... RUGBY. I thought, these people are twisting and torturing decent language in an unacceptable way. So I did these remarks, which go even further towards crassness. Sorry if it makes stomachs turn...
Well, life isn’t always pretty but it’s most often interesting. And along with my many other faults, i’m a wuss.

Both you and lasergraph write well. I’m going to have to check your profiles and do some reading. I take such joy from the English language being treated tenderly.

@Mamapolo2016 I tried to send you a message with a further link to a humorous piece, but it won't send. Read my About Me, that's the essential.

Thank you, i now know more about curling than i ever wanted to
@lorne13 my best friend since forever ... her favorite sport is curling. Which is more amusing if you know her, because (in my view of curling, and I know others feel differently, it’s got all the thrill of watching paint dry) and Judy is calm, serene, composed...if curling were a human, it would be Judy.

@Mamapolo2016 curling is big in Manitoba and Saskatchewan in winter, anyplace where its deeply frozen and dark most of the time, i think this is why its popular, anything would be in a place like that
Lol. I’m willing to accept there are nuances I don’t get. There almost always are.

Oh my god, is this true? This is awful!
WalterF · 70-79, M
@chrissykisses No no, worry not, everyone is made up. It's just to show the liberties that sports reporters take with language
chrissykisses · 22-25, F
@WalterF wow, okay! I feel better (if a bit gullible!)
LynnUK · 46-50, F
lol @ last
WalterF · 70-79, M
@LynnUK Why at last, Lynne?
LynnUK · 46-50, F
"This idiot who shoots from 3 yards out and Manages to Miss the open goal" lol
WalterF · 70-79, M
@LynnUK OK!
