I Admire My Mother

My mother is 89...every year I visit her at Christmas because one Christmas will be my last. I am so grateful for each year I get to see her.

She is "old school", raised through the depression, her parents were Irish farmers working a poor patch of land. She can be bitchy and grumpy...likes her alone time. She is extremely intelligent and open minded. Never judges anyone. Will do and give anything for those she loves.

For the 1/2 half of her life she had serious mental illnesses, centering around depression and mania. At her age, even now, she often spends time helping the mentally ill on the streets of my home town. She talks with them, gives them her number and often directs them to support centers.

She is from a time we are losing (the Golden Generation)....never complains, mentally and physically strong as all hell. She lives in a world of duty and honour. I am a 10th of the person she is.

I love greatly...and will be extremely sad the day she goes. But so grateful for the time I have her in my life. I think I will give her a call today. :)

She sounds like my grandmother. She died a couple of years ago aged 94. She bore things in her lifetime I can't even imagine. I loved her dearly and its still important for me to make her proud in everything I do.

@okaybut She was always my favourite person. Was lucky to live in the same town as her most of my life.

I lost my mother in May. Life is not the same without her.

@goliathtree Sorry to hear...I dread that day for me.
