I Am Allergic To Bullshit

Pope Francis just came out with "choosing not to have children is selfish" and I say, having them in certain cases can be even more selfish!

LOL, both Howard Stern and Sarah Palin are perfect examples. But I'm sorry, I lost much of the respect I had gained for Pope Francis for both THAT edict (because there ARE Catholic countries that are impoverished AND overpopulated,so his saying this is both selfish and irresponsible) and his desire to canonize Fr. Junipero Serra, whose system of Missions basically enslaved a large percentage of California's Native American population.

YES! When it comes to religion there is plenty to fear.
berangere · 80-89, F
They want to convert us all LOL!
Tannasheart
Yes--LMAO!

True berange, having children should be an individual choice. I think the reason he may have said this is because it takes more than 1.5 children per couple to continue your culture and/or religion. But who knows why people come to think it is their place to tell others how to live.

I agree I thought of that verse also but clearly the Pope thinks that isn't true based on the fact that he isn't married and seemingly has not tried to have children.

I totally agree with you,I did study the Bible as a young teenager while in a religious children's home.I know that "go forth and multiply "is in it and also a verse that says that "no seed should be wasted" but I do not remember anything about it being a rule for everyone as such.
berangere · 80-89, F
It is not true for him but true for everyone else LOL! Do as I say but not as I do!
TNTandCHOCOLATE
Agreed! Popes should mind their own pathetic business. Besides, the Bible says that you should not judge other people... The "selfish" remark from the Pope sounds pretty judgemental to me tough...
berangere · 80-89, F
Yes,the church is based on a self serving tissue of lies and deceit.
elephantwalk
Jesus didn't have children. That is all.
berangere · 80-89, F
This is what we are made to believe.

Hi Berangere I AM SO WITH YOU!
I was told when my son was growing up as an only child....That It was a "Sin To Raise A Child Alone"....I said "Wrong"..... the sin is having more than you can take care of.....My husband was abusive to me while I was carrying our son....I made up my mind "NO WAY I'D EVER HAVE ANOTHER CHILD TO SUFFER.....after divorcing him...LOL..Hugs Hope all is well for you.

I believe religious indoctrination has addled many people's brain, they come out with such irrational statements!
johnstlouis
FYI ... that isn't Catholic doctrine ... definitely might have been an addle minded priest ... there's a sh_tload of them!

Procreating is the most self - interested thing you can ever do in life; you're essentially trying to perpetuate your own existence beyond your small life span. As some one who will probably chose celibacy and devote my life to greater causes, I think people should stop stigmatizing long term singleness and understand that not everyone wants to run the same rat race they do.
SolarKing
Now let me see - Exactly how many children does the Pope have? By my reckoning it's a grand total of - NONE!
A definite case of 'People in glass houses' methinks!

Cherry picking of verses that APPEAR to justify an individual's point of view is the foundation for disharmony. If anyone chooses to ascribe to any religious teachings they should accept them in their entirety, not certain parts, or else you risk undermining their purpose.
The trouble is that all religious writings were created by humans. Humans are fallible and often egocentric, putting their own slant on the things they are writing about and this often makes a mockery of the teachings as a whole.
berangere · 80-89, F
I could not agree with you more. But sadly those writings are attributed to God's inspiration by those who wrote them and that makes said writings very dangerous indeed.
johnstlouis
"None"? Never know!
wraithorn
Well that's a weird comment coming from a man who does not and never will have children. I don't think the pope has a right to comment on children or marriage because he has Zero experience therein. In other words he is a hypocrite to the maximum.
Vader2112
You're so right. I know a few people who wanted it so badly it cost them their health. Let the pope do what he does best and pontificate. I'll do what I do best and take it with a grain of salt. :)
ddsAaron
Totally agree with you.
There are at least four good reasons why I shouldn't have children (if even I'm even capable of it; I don't know), and not a single reason for me to.
WinterSunShine
Pope Francis was running round the Phillipenes earlier this year telling people not to use condoms when HIV and STD's are spreading like wild fire.
berangere · 80-89, F
I think his true colours are coming out,he is not as "progressive" as people would like to think,he still follows for the most, the usual tenets of the church.
johnstlouis
Though I like this pope overall, it is like the pot calling the kettle black ... you know ... coming from a guy who chooses not to have children!👷
Zarkus
Indeed, having them without the right heart to care for the well being of their children in a respectful way can be quite harmful and way more selfish.
Tannasheart
What advice do people expect from a Pope for F sake.
berangere · 80-89, F
Most of what religion posit, just does not add up nor make any sense and cause a great deal of unnecessary misery.
berangere · 80-89, F
Exactly!
Tannasheart
It's a terrible, double-standard, a mindless contradiction, propagandized by a religious figure head.
In short it is an evil, senseless perpetration of suffering upon women and children.
sophrai
Me too. Thanks for posting the video. What fun, although, a sad commentary on the state of our consciousness.
