I Believe In God

Childhood Christmas memory.

Of course Christmas is an exciting time for most children. We knew the real meaning of Christmas growing up but of course we got really excited about the toys we were going to get as well. My parents did fill the tree underneath with so many toys every year and we were grateful. One year around 7 or 8 I remember being shocked at something my mom was making me do.

I had to take a NAP on Christmas! After we had opened our presents and the paper cleared away my brother was playing but I remember being a bit fussy and as my mom called it “acting tired” to this day I’m still not exactly sure what that meant. Anyway I was wining in the kitchen when my mom said you need a nap. (I had been eating cookies and to excited to sleep most of the night before)

I was shocked! How could mommy make me do something like that today! (I was completely convinced she wanted me out the way so she could cook in peace which wasn’t true of course) How mean it seemed! I remember running in the living room sitting by the tree saying “no no I want to play!” Probably being close to throwing a tantrum. My dad said he’d put on a Christmas movie for me for a bit and I could just relax. (A trick of course. He knew I’d fall asleep) well clearly my mother was right about me being sleepy because as my dad put on a Christmas cartoon I wouldn’t have been about to tell you what happened after the first 5 minutes lol.

When I woke up I did feel a lot better and played with my toys. My dad had doll houses set up and batteries for the toys that needed them all ready for me. My mom played with me and I was back to being a happy kid on Christmas. It’s funny though looking back at how something like a nap seemed such a big deal at the time! This comes to mind around Christmas every year and my mom and I still laugh about it.
Kids really don’t know what they need. That is why they have parents. 😊
