Unite We Must

Sirens wailing, people struck,
No time to dodge, no time to duck.
Bile rising, panic ensues,
Another story for the news.

We watch at home, eyes so wide,
Safe and sound, all tucked inside.
As the van it takes, another life,
A sister, brother, man or wife.

Atrocities, it seems so clear,
Repugnant messages of fear.
We cannot let them take the lead,
As people suffer, people bleed.

Unite we must and we will win,
Colour, creed should be no sin.
Embrace ourselves, just human bound,
And join your arms and stand your ground.

It puts me in mind of this:

Linda was killed on Saturday night just sixteen blocks from where she lived.
People gathered round the grave side -
Friends and relatives
Dressed in black.
Preacher mumbling how she's bound to go to heaven.
The service began at half past ten and was all over by eleven.
God's to give and God's to take away
But why he happened to choose Linda on Saturday night no-one can say.
It's just one of those things,
One of those things.

Al Stewart again.

Said the apple to the orange,
"Oh I wanted you to come
Close to me and kiss me
To the core.
Then you might know me
Like no other orange
Has ever done
Before.

@pennynoodles Sadly, Penny, it is not an original; it is from Al Stewart's third album, Orange.
