I Had My Tonsils Taken Out

I was 7 years old and had several bouts of tonsillitis. It was the golden age of tonsillectomies and the doctor told my mom I should have one. We went home and mom gathered up some pajamas and we went to the hospital. While mom filled out forms a nurse took me back to the room. I was very scared and clutched the bag with my pjs very young tightly. We went to a room with four beds, two of which had other kids in them. The nurse told me to undress and put on my pajamas. I got into bed and the nurse took my blood pressure and temperature. Then they drew some blood. That night I got only a light dinner since my surgery was in the morning. They got me up early, took off my pjs and put a gown on me. I don’t remember much after that. I woke up back in the room with a sore throat.

i remember older relatives talking about this. some were told you wil be able to LOTS of ice cream..
I ,, um I dont know what tonsils are for,, and why they took them out or why that all stopped
did it stop?
@Amylynne I don’t what tonsils do, but I never missed mine. In the 50-70’s it was common to remove them but it really didn’t do much to prevent strep so it’s fallen out of favor. They tell you can have all the ice cream you want, but they don’t tell you your throat will be so sore you won’t want any. I was happy because I thought I would get sore throats anymore and I wouldn’t get shots in my bum anymore. Except I did. Oh well. It was a long time ago.

@Amylynne I remember the sore throat, and the ice cream was awesome.

I was three. I remember being in the hospital in a crib with sides, and all I got to eat was ice-cream and hello. Couldn't touch either till I was well into my twenties.
