I Am Enjoying Being A Muslim

The first thing is love itself. We're so eager to make someone listen to what we have to say, how often is it when we listen to what they have to say? When someone' struggling, how often do we listen to them?

The Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him, was an amazing listener. We only think of him as an amazing speaker, well yes he was, but he was also an incurable listener.

A lot of times the people who's hearts we want to effect, we start thinking, if we just talk to them they will change. More than talking to people, we have to learn to listen to people. We don't listen just to answer them or to argue back.. and before we finish listening to what they have to say, we already have ten answers for them. No. Just listen. This is not a debate, not a contest, we're not going to crush them with evidence.. non of that. Our job is to be good listeners first. Let people say what they have to say. Let your family members air out what they feel.

One of the qualities of the Prophet, peace be upon him, is that he was extremely empathetic, meaning he would go out of his way to understand what others are feeling. So many times we find narrations of the prophet, peace be upon him, when people come to him and tell him their needs, we don't find the prophet going to them to tell them what they need. No, they come to him to tell him their problems, this is the level of comfort that they have with the prophet, peace be upon him.

Unfortunately today, anybody who even looks "religious", people don't want to come to them, instead they want to run away from them because they are afraid they might get lectured.

We are not in control, our job is to give a gentle reminder, and we can't do so unless we become good empathetic listeners. We don't have to agree with somebody else's feelings, but everybody is entitled to their feelings. We all have feelings that we have to work through. We have to learn to listen.. especially to the people we love.
