I Like to Be Barefoot

As I was driving by bus last week, I noticed that an elderly lady across the seat was staring at my bare feet.
I smiled at her and she said, "I've seen you in the city a couple of times, you're always barefoot, right?" I answered, "Yeah, that's right, I just wear shoes at work, I'm always barefoot in my free time and on the way to work, do you think that's bad?"
Now she smiled and said, "No, on the contrary, it reminds me of my childhood when I walked barefoot from spring to fall. It had to be, because I had only one pair of shoes and had to spare them. It was the poor time after World War II, you know. But I didn't mind. I preferred walking barefoot rather than wearing shoes."
I asked her if she had gone barefoot even after her childhood. "Not in public," she answered thoughtfully. "Now I'm sorry that I didn't dare walking barefoot outside, though I loved it so much, but", and now she smiled again, "how wonderful that you have the courage to be barefoot everywhere all year round."
At the next stop she got out. She looked at my bare feet again, smiled and said: "Looks healthy, go on walking barefoot, and all the best." "I'll always go barefoot," I answered, and smiled back.
