I Had Or Have To Wear A School Uniform

I think people from other countries would find us strange because school uniform is such a big thing here. Like in France they don’t wear it. But here we do. You can buy school clothes in all the supermarkets. And especially in the summer when they have what they call Back to School which starts in July before we even finished school. I first wore uniform when I was 3. Primary school uniforms are all quite similar. Just the colour is different and the badge on your polo shirt and hoody. Mine was a red top. And black skirt. Mostly we wear pleated skirts.
In secondary we still wear pleated skirts but we wear a blouse and tie. It depends on what age you are. In my school we wore a green blouse and navy jumper or cardi in Years 7 til 11 and now I wear a white blouse and the tie is different.

Most UK schools now won't allow parents to buy school uniforms in supermarkets. They have to be bought from the school itself or school's "official supplier" - who charges exorbitant prices partly to cover the large bribe (or "commission") paid to the school.

@Blodyn You're in Wales aren't you? Are schools there prohibited from ripping off parents like English schools do?

@rob19 I've seen it myself. Shirts from the school's "official supplier" - £20. Pack of 5 similar but better quality shirts from Asda - £10.

I don’t know if they are prohibited but they don’t. You can buy uniform in local shops in town or in Asda or Tesco except they don’t have ties. @Sharon

@Blodyn It's getting more and more common in England, especially with the Academies. They see it simply as another source of money to pay inflated salaries to "super headteachers" (and dividends to the company's shareholders) who are supposed to "make a difference". In practice they often fail so the Academy is renamed, another "super headteacher" is brought in who starts by redesigning the uniform to get more money from impoverished parents and so the cycle repeats.

Parents are powerless because, if don't pay the fees by buying the over priced uniform, their children are bullied by the teachers by being put in isolation or excluded from the school.

I had an elastic tie in primary but when I got to secondary it was a proper one requiring a Windsor knot. I remember feeling very proud when I got that.

@Blodyn You can go and impress people with your knowledge now.

I shall. I shall say Is that a Windsor knot? And they will look at me like I’m from another planet I expect. @Gumba1000
