I Have Memories I Can Never Forget
Another memory about my mother's wit.
We were at a pool party. My mother was not a swimmer. I like to swim but had finished swimming as the sun started to set on that hot summer day. All the swimmers had cleared the pool for one of the illustrious guests, an Olympic gold medal swimmer, who had offered to demonstrate some of the dives that had won him the gold medal.
He jumped up onto the diving board, bounced once and took off into a magnificent swan dive plunging into the pool. Everyone spontaneouly applauded...
Except my mother who stood there looking grimly toward the pool.
The man standing next her asked, "What's wrong? Why aren't you applauding?"
She kept staring at the water as she answered, "He hasn't come up yet."
