If they come back it’s probably some form of memory loss. They forgot why they left the first time.

There is no magical answer to that. If your reasons for letting them go still make sense, then stand your ground. Their refusal to take no for an answer should probably be regarded as a red flag.

I read once about employers encouraging their employees to find employment elsewhere, and with a policy of later welcoming them back with open arms. It worked out well for good employers. Of course they didn't promise to welcome everyone back, and in effect it was a way to gently filter out the ones they didn't want to keep for the long run. Also those who came back brought back what the competitors were up to, and what their competitors were doing wrong that resulted in not retaining their best employees.
