This is interesting. According to the quiz, I have a "neutral" accent, which is associated with the lower Midwest, Pennsylvania, western Maryland, and northern West Virginia. I have never lived in this area, but the description does say I could just as easily be from somewhere else and that I may have moved around quite a bit as a child, which is true. But I challenge the notion that people from this part of the country don't have a regional accent. Many folks from the region, especially its southernmost reaches, speak with what sounds to me like a slight southern accent.

Okay, so no surprise that I got[center]

but why don't they have one for slightly further east? The Cape Codder in me is insulted!
@sarabee1995 OMG! We speak in the same accent?? 🤗

@Vivaci Oh! I see that now. I guess so. But I kinda doubt it because I do distinctly sound like Cape Cod. Are you from the northeast?
@sarabee1995 My husband's cousin sister stays in Cape Cod. Its a sweeter accent I think. Nope, I have only visited the NE on vacation. Always been staying here in Cali. :)

@Vivaci Got it. Then it's very unlikely that we share dialects! ;)
@sarabee1995 I would faint if that happened!! 😁

@sarabee1995 I think they can only manage broad accent categories with this quiz. Designing a quiz that could tap into the sometimes subtle differences between the various accents found within a region would be a pretty tall order.
sarabee1995 · 26-30, F
@Rutterman Well true, especially in the northeast. There are so many localized dialects up there.
Rutterman · 46-50, M
@sarabee1995 This is true of many other places as well. There must be at least five different accents found in the New Orleans metropolitan area, for example.
sarabee1995 · 26-30, F
@Rutterman Actually I know that about New Orleans! I've never been there, but went through OCS with someone who had gone to Tulane and was somewhat of a linguistics expert and we talked once about localized dialects around Boston and around New Orleans! :)

@sarabee1995 Accents are endlessly fascinating, aren't they?
sarabee1995 · 26-30, F
@Rutterman Absolutely. I briefly considered languages and linguistics as a major until I discovered how into dialects I would have to get. Imagine not only learning a foreign language, but learning it well enough to pull off some local dialect or be able to pull off multiple local dialects? And then do that with multiple languages!
Rutterman · 46-50, M
@sarabee1995 Sounds almost impossible. Someone would have to have an incredible aptitude for languages to be any good in that field.
sarabee1995 · 26-30, F
@Rutterman Exactly. And to do it conversationally. I can carry *basic* conversations in French or German, but no way could I switch on or off a Bavarian or Québécois dialect!
