As someone who lends the money to your friend....

Its best to just give the money. Maybe work out a deal where they give you a little something in return, later. A "loan" creates an adversarial relationship right off.

If they are friends and do not swindle me I am pretty generous.

It's obvious they can't pay it back so, I'd reduce the amount to what they can afford.

FYI, I never lend money I'm not willing to lose. The fact is, most people who are in a bind and need to borrow money, will generally keep borrowing money to pay other debts they owe.
