At my grammar school, if a boy was caned, a notice would be placed on the notice board outside the headmaster's study: "M Smith has been beaten for smoking" or whatever.

I agree. I think, though, that caning was much rarer than at your school, and therefore a more major event. And I have to confess that I always checked the noticeboard when I walked past.
Being rarer would make it more embarrassing for the boy who was caned. At my school, I doubt anyone would have taken much notice of the announcement as it was such a common event.
