I Have Random Thoughts Of Randomness

Are British people aware that "Hoover" is a brand name, not a generic term for a vacuum cleaner?

I ask because I just heard a British person in a YouTube video talk about a "Dyson hoover."

I"m sure they are. Just as many Americans use the term Kleenex and Xerox for paper tissues and photocopying, respectively

We call em hoovers cos at one point just about everyone in the Uk who had a vacuum cleaner was manufactured by Hoover. The name has stuck that’s all.

@Supesun we call all facial tissue Kleenex ..
Most of us call gelatin Jello no matter what brand it is
We're aware, we just don't give a shit.

It’s like Kleenex in the U.S. The generic term is “tissue” but many people say “Kleenex” - a brand of tissue.
