Is it embarrassing to have a fake Christmas tree?

Is it like a shameful act or is it acceptable in society? People at work were like “real trees only!” “The smell is vital!” and I was afraid to admit I had a fake one in the basement. I’m not sure if really want the house to smell like pine tree anyway? Am I the social outcast I always knew deep down that I actually am? For the record I grew up Jewish but now don’t follow any religion and a tree seems like a fun thing to have. But not a real one.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with having an artificial tree. Some are actually allergic to real trees - or don't like the scent. Others don't like the idea of killing a real tree. Still others like that you buy the artificial tree and then have it for years. While the tree may be artificial, the look and feeling are real...

@sciguy18 well you just made my day sciguy 💜
katielass · F
@sciguy18 Yes, I'd rather have a real tree but my sinuses don't like them and it's just not worth having a headache that lasts 2 months. I get enough of that from women who don't know when to stop applying perfume. Hint: If you can smell it you're wearing too much.

@Fallflower Glad I could help...

sighmeupforthat · 46-50, M
huh?

i'm ashamed of those who kill real trees just for this.

horrible.
Fallflower · 46-50, F
@sighmeupforthat it’s tree murder I say, tree murder.

i like the smell of the trees...and i know it’s a cash crop ..and you can recycle them...it still seems like such a waste..
MethDozer · M
@SW-User Christmas trees and tree farms for them are actually ecologically sound and environmental boons.

Nothing wrong with a fake tree. I have one. You can buy scented sticks to hang on it and it will make your house smell like a pine forest.
SW-User
While the smell is nice, I've only had a real tree once....
It was a pain in the ass to keep it sufficiently watered and maintained to keep the tree staying healthy... plus keep the pets from getting their drinking water from there!! Ugh
Fake trees for me always!!
SW-User
@Fallflower glad you did PITA and not PETA!! lol
Fallflower · 46-50, F
No I don’t want the PETA snobs after me too!!
SW-User
@Fallflower he he 😁😁
CountScrofula · 41-45, M
Eh, fake trees are fine, although I'm pro-real tree 'cause I like the smell.
Fallflower · 46-50, F
As long as you’re not one of those tree snobs 😜@CountScrofula
CountScrofula · 41-45, M
@Fallflower Nah. we've had a fake tree for years because my wife doesn't want to be hassled with a real one. lol
Mine isn't real either, but there's nothing fake about festive spirit it provides. U_U
No. Who cares. I personally hate sweeping up pine needles for a year.
VoloProVeritas62 · 61-69, M
Not at all. I have more than one and use them every Christmas.
no . don't listen to the tree snobs
Heartlander · 80-89, M
In general, real trees are very, very flammable. If you want it, you can get the "pine smell" with just a tiny pine branch. My preference is to skip the tree, whether real or not, and instead get poinsettias ...

Fallflower · 46-50, F
@Heartlander I actually have a huge poinsettia. This video makes it seem on par with taking care of a newborn.
Heartlander · 80-89, M
Yes, that probably accounts for why most poinsettias don't survive much beyond the Christmas season :)

In a previous life (years and years ago when the kids were young) we had a real tree we bought from one of the corner Christmas tree venders. After Christmas, rather than just pitch it out, I thought I'd experiment and see just how dangerous they were. So I took it out to the back yard and put a match to it to see how fast it would burn. It didn't burn, it EXPLODED. The entire tree ignited instantly in one big, intense fireball.

Sort of like this but our's was much faster. It was a few days after New Year and probably much drier than one here ...

@Heartlander holy crap that is terrifying
Byron8by7 · M
An artificial tree is easier to deal with - they don't shed needles, and some people have allergies. We have had artificial trees for years. You don't have to go out and buy a new one every year - much more convenient. If others like real trees, fine for them. You are okay to have an artificial tree.
SW-User
Who gives a crap what others think about that?

Now I'll tell you what I think: I love real trees and my family and I go and cut one down every year. But fake trees are much more convenient and a tree doesn't have to die. So it's up to you.
JustNik · 51-55, F
It doesn’t matter. I used to get real ones but I found an artificial one that was fatter and jollier and just delights the heck out of me so I’ve had that for years now. It’s nice not to have to worry about it. 🙂
Fallflower · 46-50, F
Yay! Mine is not very fat or jolly. It’s kinda skinny. Oh well, next time! @JustNik
Ynotisay · M
I think people who would "shame" others for having an artificial tree aren't quite grasping the concept of Christmas.
My thing is I don't like dead trees or plants in my space.
Fallflower · 46-50, F
@Ynotisay I was kidding about the shame. And yeah, the dead thing bugs me too a little. I’m not a fan of cut flowers for the same reason. We’re such Debby Downers 😢
whateverhappens · 26-30, F
where i live there arent any real trees just fake ones and its better.. cause no garbage trucks wasnt gonna pick up trees from all over thats the time they will never work😂, its cool.. just a tree
SW-User
Nothing wrong with fake.... I fake it every year lol ... once I tried a real one ... I prefer my fake tree... 😁
Fallflower · 46-50, F
As long as you only fake it once a year haha @SW-User
SW-User
@Fallflower 😂😂🤣.. 😉
Neoerectus · M
I have had both. I prefer a real one-probably due to traditions with my parents and then my kids associated with going to woods or a tree farm.
SoftServe · 26-30, M
Well some people are allergic to trees. There’s the fire hazard and disposal so I’m ok with fake trees
katielass · F
Well some of us are allergic so we have nice fake trees and it's no one's business.
Have you had a real tree before? They are nice.
Fallflower · 46-50, F
No I have not... this is all new to me @MissMollyCharlotte0702
Try a small one. My first real tree was a small one and I loved it!!@Fallflower
adhane05 · 31-35, M
Not shameful at all, many of the fake trees have some cool lighting that comes with it.
RoxClymer · 41-45, M
For me no embarrassing for me it's just practical even though I prefer real
Noble · 56-60, M
Nothing wrong with it, but you’ll miss the naturally pleasant scent of a real tree.
SW-User
It's not embarrassing at all! Easier to clean up after Christmas too ;)
Get a pine scented candle :) thats what i did 😄😄
SW-User
I don't even have a 🌲
So yeah
Who cares

Ok I may have laid it on too thick... I’m kidding about the social outcast thing but I really did want to know what people think about real vs artificial 😅
Real trees smell great, but pine needles everywhere! @Fallflower
VoloProVeritas62 · 61-69, M
@Fallflower 😆 Have fun with them and have a Merry Christmas.

No. I'm not embarrassed by my family's fake tree. It assembles quickly, looks like the real thing, costs nothing---and it folds up and goes back into the closet after the holidays.
MethDozer · M
It kinda is a bastard attempt but hell with it. Real trees are a lot more festive and such though.
@MethDozer you bastard!!! Lol
