I Love Trees

I love trees and it is breaking my heart to have to take down so many around my little house in the woods. Our state has been devasteted by the Emerald Ash Bore.

Across from my house too!

Between the Emerald Ash Borer and Dutch Elm Disease a lot of our forest land has been destroyed. Thankfully the maples have grown quickly to fill in the gaps!

@SweetMae I remember returning to a campground with a few years in between and those nice shady sites were now in an open field. It's just so sad to see nature destroyed!
SweetMae · 70-79, F
@SageWanderer It will take many years to recover.
SageWanderer · 70-79, M
@SweetMae Sadly, yes it will.😔

I took down 19 in the front acreage of my property last summer. I have two more that might last two more years. Planting a lot of maples and tulip trees to try to replace. I’m truly sad to see these kindly gentlemen trees go.
trackman11 · 61-69, M
@SweetMae I like blue spruce. If you start small the take a few years to lay down a good root system and then grow rapidly. Ok. I’ve bored you enough my friend, but thank you. I enjoyed talking trees with you. 🙂
SweetMae · 70-79, F
@trackman11 Thank you for all the advice!! Much appreciated.
trackman11 · 61-69, M
@SweetMae you are welcome Mae. Keep being you. I’ve observed how many are so genuinely happy to see you comment on their post. You are needed.
Degbeme · 70-79, M
It`s everywhere. They`re doing a sweep in my town too.
SweetMae · 70-79, F
@Degbeme I love trees. It is sad to watch.
Degbeme · 70-79, M
@SweetMae It is sad. 😟

Hi Mae

Take heart. While it's hard for us to watch - I read in a book how things like this are fixed over time and are part of how the forest will rejuvenate itself.

- "The Hidden Life of Trees: What They Feel, How They Communicate—Discoveries From a Secret World - Book by Peter Wohlleben"
SweetMae · 70-79, F
@fun4us2b Thank you!! That looks very interesting!!
fun4us2b · M
@SweetMae It is - it talks about how those little tiny skinny saplings, maybe 4 feet tall? How they are actually like 20-25 years old, they have developed root systems and they are just waiting for an opening in the canopy, so they can race skyward....so don't step on them!
SweetMae · 70-79, F
@fun4us2b Oh no! I wouldn't do that.
SweetMae · 70-79, F
@Peaches Those are heavenly. I am going to plant an evergreen outside my kitchen window so I can see every morning.
Peaches · F
@SweetMae I planted a Crape Myrtle in front of my window. It's supposed to bloom but hasn't yet.
SweetMae · 70-79, F
@Peaches I wish they grew here.
Magenta · F
Aaw that is sad indeed. Looks like you were able to save quite a few though.
SweetMae · 70-79, F
@Magenta I missed your question. We will replant Red Maples.
Magenta · F
@SweetMae WOW! That photo is breathtaking. 🧡
Oh that's good you can replant.
SweetMae · 70-79, F
@Magenta Thank you! ☺️

Oh no. 😔I love trees too and am in the group "I Love Big Trees" I believe is the name of that group. Trees have their own personalities. 🌲🌳Some of the trees here in Oregon are dying off too. I hate to see this happen because we need our trees!
SweetMae · 70-79, F
@Peaches I know. It will affect t the temperature too.
SW-User
I know how you feel! I had the same issue before I sold my house last year. I don't recall, are you in Vermont? My house was on the western border in NH.
SweetMae · 70-79, F
@SW-User I am in Connecticut. They want us to take down 20 more but we can't afford that.
SW-User
@SweetMae Ugh. I feel your pain. I had a lot of ash trees. Taking them down nearly broke the bank!
SweetMae · 70-79, F
@SW-User These are between 80-100 feet tall. No one wants the wood either. It is everywhere.
DragonFruit · 61-69, M
I’m one of only a few people on my street who has trees in the front of the house, as most of the trees in the area were Dutch Elms....and most of those succumbed to Dutch Elm Disease.
SweetMae · 70-79, F
@DragonFruit I am so sorry to hear that. This will change our landscape for a long time to come.
pennynoodles · 56-60, F
Whilst driving around Scotland the other week, I saw areas that whole forests were cut down- it always upsets me to see such sights.
SweetMae · 70-79, F
@pennynoodles The places that in traveled in Scotland were so picturesque. That seems like a crime.
pennynoodles · 56-60, F
Most places were but I guess it is inevitable that some places have to be cut down.@SweetMae
jim44444 · 70-79, M
It is too bad they cannot be used for lumber. Only good for local firewood.
SweetMae · 70-79, F
@jim44444 It is too bad. Do you do woodworking?
jim44444 · 70-79, M
@SweetMae yes. Ash is a tough wood to work but it is beautiful.
SweetMae · 70-79, F
@jim44444 At least it does make good firewood. It has been call the "firewood of kings" according to a friend of mine.
sunrisehawk · 61-69, M
It is like loosing old friends that you've held in your heart every day. Big hugs to you for each loss you've had.
SweetMae · 70-79, F
@sunrisehawk Thank you so much! 🤗
samueltyler2 · 80-89, M
Nature can be cruel.
samueltyler2 · 80-89, M
@SweetMae not any more. I don't remember the temperature it needs to get to and for how long. It requires both.
SweetMae · 70-79, F
@samueltyler2 Well, 20 below seems cold enough to me.
samueltyler2 · 80-89, M
@SweetMae but it has to be over time. The cold has to be persistent enough to get through the bark, etc., of the tree so it cam get to the burrows where the beetles insulate themselves.
MelanieUK · 22-25, F
But won't you rejoice in the New Life that springs forth , for your childrens children many years to come
SwampFlower · 31-35, F
I know it hurts to lose them! I'm sorry for your trees. Your little forest is lovely. ❤️
SweetMae · 70-79, F
@SwampFlower Thank you! Now to clean up all that mess.
Newfound · 41-45, M
Well, to make lemonade from lemons, do you have a wood stove?
SweetMae · 70-79, F
@Newfound Yes, I will eventually burn it all.
melbeacher · 56-60, M
But that is all good wood for burning next year !!!!!
SweetMae · 70-79, F
@melbeacher Yes, it will be!! 🔥
